If we're heading into a recession, how long do you think it will last?

Just that really. When do you think our economy will be thriving again?

10 years is my guess.

DontBeShelfish · 28/10/2020 18:02

I like to think optimistically and want to believe it'll bounce back because people love to shop and do things, but if I'm honest I think it'll take a generation to get back to the way things were.

Out of the EU? When the US decides to allow it. We'll be a conveniently deniable vassal.

Chevron123 · 28/10/2020 18:09

COVID plus Brexit = 10 years at least.

Having lived in a country with an economy based on primary industry (agriculture and mining) and manufacturing, I never really understand how the UK economy works. A bunch of people in financial services make squillions and then the government redistributes it (or not).

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 28/10/2020 18:20

The British economy hasn't really been functioning since it lost its primary industry. Take a look at Mansfield or any other of the old mining towns. We have transformed into one devoted entirely to just moving electronic figures around, in finances and through heredity. Few recognise the value of resources: those who push their lack of importance the most are those who've already removed them all from the vast majority of us. This is a third world country that just doesn't know it yet.

Chevron123 · 28/10/2020 19:26

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes. Exactly. Our response to getting the economy going again is to keep the pubs open and drop stamp duty. Other countries quarantine their primary industries and close everything else. I read somewhere that a significant proportion of Brits born since 1980 will inherit more from parents than they will ever earn in their lifetimes.

Based on other recessions I have seen I would imagine it could last 8yrs at a minimum 10max.

millymollymoomoo · 28/10/2020 20:33

It’s not if
A very very long time if we keep locking down
Young generation are screwed both in terms of lack of jobs and opportunity and also saddled with eye watering national debt

DontBeShelfish · 28/10/2020 21:02

Don't worry though, climate change will probably fuck us over soon so we won't have to worry about the economy. Look on the bright side? Wink

AlecTrevelyan006 · 28/10/2020 21:16

it will have to go some to be worse than the Great Slump 1430-1490

but I reckon this one will be 10-15 years

MillieEpple · 28/10/2020 21:20

10 years
But i really think that we can invest in green energy to give the country something that isnt city finance
