What is this strange object? Vintage kitchen related - pic attached!

So last week I bought a box of vintage kitchenalia at auction for a couple of items in the box.
I found this in the bottom of it. Does anyone have any idea what it is? The only thing I can think is a bread knife of some description, but the scalloped edge really isn't at all sharp. The wording on it says 'Protected' & my Swiss Amry knife is just for scale... it's a big bugger! I'm pretty clued up on my vintage ware, but never seen anything like this!
Any ideas?

No idea. But The Kitchen Cabinet on R4 have a regular segment where you can send in pictures just like this and have the experts try to help in case you fancy trying that route!

DappledThings Great idea - thank you!

You must come back on here and tell us what it is if you find out. I'm very curious!

I can’t think it would be a bread knife, even if sharpened the blade would be too wavy, a bread knife would need to be more serrated. Curious.

It looks like a type of hand stirring and mashing utensil used to make big pots of hot fruit for canning like applesauce/jam/marmalade.

I wondered about a curds and whey stirrer, but can't find anthing like it. It's also quite thin and pliable so not sure how much force it could take!

Is it not for smoothing out icing

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/10/2020 15:30

It's a pallet knife, so I would guess the wavey edge is to put lines in the icing once applied with the smooth side and the holes are for some other decorating purpose - piping dots or applying chocolate drops in an even pattern?

Try r/whatisthisthing if you’re on Reddit. They’re amazing with identifying all sorts of weird stuff.

Google apple butter stirrer and you get similar looking objects

Good shout - I think you're right!
HellooJackie · 28/10/2020 15:43

Definitely a pallet knife, just not sure why there are holes and weird edging.

Pebble21uk · 28/10/2020 15:45

We did think pallet knife as well - but it would have to be a bloody big cake, that's the only problem... it measures nearly half a meter end to end - it's huge!!
Apple butter stirrer may be somewhere nearer the mark!

I didn't realise it was that big.

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/10/2020 16:12

Sounds about right. Here is mine next to a 2 litre bottle for scale (couldn't find a tape measure!)

Butter churn knife?

parietal · 28/10/2020 16:39

definitely palette knife - it could be very big if it was from a catering kitchen

Dilbertian · 28/10/2020 16:52

I funny think it's a pallet knife, the holes would be a problem while smoothing icing.

If it is very flexible, I think it is probably a jam or sugar spatula for scraping out pans of boiling sugar or syrup.

Have a look at videos of pulled sugar being made, especially on a commercial scale, and you'll see that the scrape out the pans with metal spatulas.

The holes wouldn't be in the way, though I'm not sure what benefit the scaled edge would give.

Dilbertian · 28/10/2020 16:52

I don't think, not I funny think.
