Stupid postage question

Please help I am being really thick. I need to sent a large letter. It is A4 and weighs 105g. It isn't valuable.

Can I just stick it in the postbox with a large first class stamp on? The royal mail website seems to say I can only do that with an item up to 100g. Does that mean for anything over 100g I have to go to the post office to send it?!

Send, not sent.

Yes it had to go to the post office or if you're really stuck for time you can stick any stamps on as long as they have a value of £1.40 or more as this is what it would cost you to send it second class.

Argh how annoying! My nearest post office is closed and the other one only opens between 9 and 1.

Thanks for your answer.

You can buy postage online: pay using PayPal or debit card and print off a label to stick on. (Piece of paper stuck on with sellotape if no labels). Works for most letters and parcels, the only problem I've found is that some post boxes aren't big enough for A4- you need to go to a particular box. I will never queue for stamps again!!

You most definitely do not need to go to the post office or print a label - just stick on enough stamps to cover the postage in the appropriate weight band and pop it in the letterbox.

You can send it as a parcel but still put it in the letter box. I've done this before and it's been fine. You just won't get proof of postage.

*Post box, not letter box.

Why would she send it as a parcel when it's a large letter? Hmm
fitzbilly · 28/10/2020 16:58

As long as you put enough postage on it you can put it in a post box. You can buy postage online too.

Best website ever

howmanystamps.co.uk/

But then we buy stamps in a pack of 80 or something as a cost saving measure so we always have stamps in.

tommika · 28/10/2020 17:49

You can send it by just putting on enough stamps to cover the price, but you’re then overpaying.
If you have a printer then you can buy the right postage here:

m.royalmail.com/price-finder

It will have the same price online and in the post office for this one, but some levels of postage have a discount when you print your own
