Looks like the new owners of ASDA are selling off George

George and General Merchandise colleagues were called into a meeting yesterday, couple of George colleagues came out looking upset. Has been some speculation in the media but looks like that is what is happening.

New owners have already done a deal with Greggs so probably going to get rid of the rotisserie and maybe the pizza section too. ALSO think that the alcohol section will be halved/ditched and maybe they will run a concession instore like Bargain Booze or Majestic Wines, that sort of thing.

Its a shame for the staff who may lose their jobs.

I'm really not a fan of George. I find the clothes so boxy. As someone said page 1 - it's no TU for clothes.

I love their bedding and towels and they do do good pizzas!

Perhaps George is being separated out to sell as a different going concern due to competition laws, it makes ASDA a smaller business in theory.

I wonder whether these larger stores are no longer profitable due to changing habits. My massive out of town Tesco downsized and sold off bits of its store to concessions around three years ago, the Homebase has recently halved in size, all sorts of shops are having to change in order to stay alive and possibly even more so now.

Still, there's no confirmed news that George is going, it's currently speculation.

I think this is to be taken with a pinch of salt. The ASDA Minworth store in Birmingham (a massive busy store) has just this week reopened it's George section after undergoing a brand new expensive looking renovation.
They've added a sushi bar next to the pizza counter and seem to increasing the ready to take away food offerings.
