Cabbage stopped my scan

Booked for a PET-CT scan today, which meant I had to eat a very low carb diet yesterday and nothing after 5pm until after the scan today except water. I was given a very specific diet sheet to follow which I thought I’d read carefully and didn’t find too difficult to follow because I’m low carbing anyway.
Got to the hospital and had to list absolutely everything I’d eaten down to the last ingredient: omelette for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch, no-carb lasagne for dinner, a Michael Mosley recipe which uses cabbage leaves instead of pasta. At the end the nurse said ‘I’ll have to check this as cabbage is on the banned list’, and went off to check with the consultant. While she was gone I checked my phone for the list and there it was - no potatoes, carrots, beans, lentils, peas ....and cabbage. When she came back she said the consultant had vetoed the scan, saying the cabbage would affect the results too much and I’d have to come back next week. I was really embarrassed and apologised profusely but all the time I’m thinking ‘cabbage? CABBAGE?’ Why in gods name is cabbage a problem when Brussel sprouts ( ie tiny cabbages ), cauliflower and broccoli are all on the OK list?
Any drs, PET Scan technicians etc on here who can shed any light?

Can I ask a question about the lasagne? Is the cabbage noticeable as a substitute? I love cabbage but my husband bloody hates the stuff but 9/10 he eats so quickly he doesn't even notice what was on his plate. If it's subtle I might have to try it.

I think if you chose very thin cabbage leaves it might be ok. The recipe says red or green cabbage and I use red because I love it, but the leaves are quite thick. They get nice and tender during cooking though.

Round 2 of no carb diet tomorrow in preparation for scan Mark 2 on Monday. Not a shred of cabbage shall pass my lips! I’m basically living on chicken, courgettes and asparagus.

Update - scan completed successfully. It was delayed though, so I ended up not eating for 20 hours. I was so bloody hungry afterwards I devoured a packet of giant chocolate buttons and a McDonalds in about fifteen minutes. Rather embarrassingly, I was greeted by one of the staff with ‘oh you’re the one who made the cabbage lasagne!’

That’s one of the hospital staff, not McDonalds. That would be weird 😉

I think what happens is, due to the gassy build up, the images get distorted, and the medical staff get distracted by something that looks like the face of our lord and saviour.

Jesus in the cabbage scan.

‘oh you’re the one who made the cabbage lasagne!’

Perhaps they thought you needed more of a head scan than heart scan. Cabbage lasagne?

LaBelleSauvage123 · 02/11/2020 19:25

Yes - it’s delicious!

You’ll be remembered there for a while. Grin

You did a good deed, you cheered up healthcare professionals who are likely under great stress in these covid times.
