Raised itchy mole

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 27/10/2020 21:30

Iv had a mole on my hip for many years. It’s always been raised.

Where it is my belly covers it 🙈 but for the last 6 months it’s been really itchy. I try rubbing it as it hurts to itch. It’s bled a few times.

Is it worth getting it checked or is it where it is, it might be abit sweaty and making it itch? 🤮🙈

Is It even a mole? Maybe a skin tag? Uhh

Seaswims · 27/10/2020 21:35

Irregular shape, different colours, itching and bleeding - they are all big warning signs OP

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 27/10/2020 21:42

Now I think about it that hip has felt really “numb” lately, but I thought it was from my section 4 years ago.

It could be something as simple as a sebhorreic keratosis, quite benign (I have loads, but I’m old), but best to get it checked out, for peace of mind.

PlanDeRaccordement · 27/10/2020 22:18

Agree get it checked out right away. Those are all warning signs of skin cancer.

Allywill · 27/10/2020 22:34

I have something similar on my forehead. Made a gp appointment (which was over telephone) I explained my worries, gpmsaid come down now. She spent several minutes (felt like hours) looking at it with an eyeglass thing to declare it “fine”. Feel much better now. It’s still itchy and dry but she said to put some emollient on it and it does seem to be improving. Get it checked better safe than sorry.

Get it removed

MrsMigginsMate · 27/10/2020 22:45

I had one like that on my hairline, and very apologetically told the doctor 'i'm sorry for wasting your time, it's probably bleeding because it's catching on my hairbrush'. She accepted that and sent me home, in hindsight I was being daft and should have pushed for referral.

2 years later I went back and was referred urgently to dermatology, the consultant said nothing to worry about but we will shave it to biopsy anyway and it came back as cancerous. Don't worry though, basal cell carcinoma is extremely common and not life limiting at all, it's one of the slowest growing cancers and the only treatment is to cut it out and then you're discharged and it really won't come back or spread. Had a small section of skin removed with a few stitches and everything is completely fine.

But I am cross with myself for minimising it to my doctor and almost encouraging them to sweep it under the rug. It's best you get a dermatology referral under the urgent two week wait system. But please don't worry yourself, there's so many things it can be that are so easily fixed. The whole experience taught me not to be so scared of the "c word", and that an awful lot of cancers are easily treated and never come back, unlike the scary portrayal on TV and film.

Good luck OP

Thank you, going to ring in the morning.

The more I think about it the hip area has been playing up more. It’s really tingly/numb around the area and my hip hurts but as I said I assumed it was from my spinal 4 years ago 🙈

Another here to have a nag! Please get it checked OP

Like another PP I've had malignant melanoma before - a few years ago. I was lucky as it was very early stage but I'm now ultra cautious now about my skin

Good luck x

Makegoodchoices · 27/10/2020 23:13

Get it checked. Mine is on my shoulder, got bigger and was itchy. Turned out to be a skin tag inside a mole, but definitely worth checking out.

Janegrey333 · 27/10/2020 23:18

It’s important to get it looked at. x

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 28/10/2020 12:41

Thank you.

I have a phone appointment on Friday and Iv had to send photos 🙈

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 30/10/2020 09:59

He said it just looks like a normal mole. But I’m not sure I believe that?

OP posts:
Seaswims · 30/10/2020 10:03

Did you go in and see the doctor? Did he have a good look with a mini magnifying glass thing? I had a mole that was a perfect circle but had gone darker and they whipped it off. I'm shocked that he's said its fine - itchy, bleeding and an irregular shape!!

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 30/10/2020 10:11

Nope he just looked at that photo.

He said they won’t remove it either atm due to Covid.

OP posts:
Seaswims · 30/10/2020 10:57

Is there an option to have it privately removed?

WitchQueenofDarkness · 30/10/2020 10:59

Keep the photograph and take another every couple of weeks. If there is any change then you have evidence to push for a dermatology referral.

If it’s any help I have a couple shaped like that. They’ve been checked by a specialist and cleared.

frustrationcentral · 30/10/2020 13:18

Even if it's suspicious?! What is going on with this world
Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 30/10/2020 16:28

I know. He just said it’s a normal mole.

I’m really worried about jt.

OP I’ve had both basal cell carcinoma and a referral for squamous cell (which turned out to be benign!)

Yours looks to me like two moles of different colours and they are fairly symmetrical in mole terms so whilst I wouldn’t hugely worry, I would definitely try and get it looked at because of the itching, that (and fast growth) was the trigger for my BCC.

I went private for excision and removal as the NHS couldn’t book me a bloody appointment as there was nothing in our region within two weeks. It cost me £650 for the op and biopsy.

You need a referral letter from your GP but I was seen within 48 hours. I would hope they would write you a referral for peace of mind.

Call back and explain you are worried and want to be seen in person and if they won’t then ask for a referral so you can deal with it privately!

frustrationcentral · 30/10/2020 19:47

@Thedarksideofthemoon30 , it might be worth looking to see if boots still do the mole checking service?

I use an app called skin vision. The app spotted that my mole was not good and I even had an email from the app producer asking me to have it looked at. TBH I probably would have left it otherwise so I owe them a lot. I've since used the app to track another mole - which seems ok at the moment
