Buy the tablets online. Use generic thrush cream

NannyR · 27/10/2020 20:19

I know it doesn't help much now, but they are much cheaper to buy online and have at home "just in case". The generic ones are also a fair bit cheaper than canestan in a pharmacy.

dementedpixie · 27/10/2020 20:20

And i mean buy generic tablets too

ILoveMyMonkey · 27/10/2020 20:27

Always ask for the unbranded version at the pharmacy - saves a fortune.

Molly333 · 27/10/2020 22:36

Oh thanks ill have a look . Sooo ridiculously expensive im cross

Last time I was in I asked for it on minor ailments - but I am on a budget and £14 is a good chunk of cash for me! I got the generic pill prescribed and paid about £4 for the generic cream.

itsureis · 01/11/2020 23:31

I agree about the price - it's extortionate!!

I never thought to look online for the tablets. Is there a brand/ website that's recommended ?
I'm getting it quite often atm. Not sure why ... stress/ too much coffee/ not enough water but it's incredibly annoying 😠

Guineapigbridge · 02/11/2020 01:15

A couple of non-medicine interventions if you're interested:

Apple cider vinegar is great for treating thrush (drink a couple of teaspoons every day and you can also douche your privates with it).

And, changing your diet away from sugars and bread can help.

IndieTara · 02/11/2020 01:37

Thrush medication is so expensive. I huh when it's in Wowcher / Groupon. Around £12 for 3 tablets and 3 tubes of cream

DramaAlpaca · 02/11/2020 01:45

Oh, think yourselves lucky you have the NHS, it's the main thing I miss now I'm no longer in the UK, having taken it for granted for most of my life. I live in Ireland and have to pay privately for all doctors' visits and prescription medicines. It costs a fortune. I can't remember how much Canestan is, but I know it's more than has been quoted here. Even over the counter stuff is so much more expensive than at home. I always stock up when I go back, but these days of course I can't go back.

Albgo · 02/11/2020 02:45

@QueenPaws thank you!

Bagelsandbrie · 02/11/2020 06:24

Check the ingredients of the non branded creams - many only have 1% medication whereas the Canestan has 2%. It’s a small difference but worth noting. If it helps and you get thrush regularly you can get it prescribed- I suffer from recurrent thrush due to autoimmune conditions and get a monthly prescription for canestan internal cream and external creams. I don’t pay due to medical reasons but even if you do you’d still save money.

Rory786 · 02/11/2020 06:28

I had thrush recently and it took 2 tubes, a tablet and a pessary to clear it! So expensive!

dementedpixie · 02/11/2020 07:12

Canesten does both 1% and 2% creams.

itsureis · 02/11/2020 07:49

I'm waiting - 8am - and the surgery opens.

Going to try and get a re-prescription order but I'll also check out the online shops.

And here's me thinking it was just me !

Thank you

toria658 · 02/11/2020 08:15

Hideously expensive, imo another female tax. I go for a non branded cream, as it’s a fairly frequent pmt symptom.

If you've had it more than once in 6 months it's possible there's an underlying cause, either the tablets/cream not properly clearing it so it regrows or something else like high sugar levels in your body which could indicate PCOS, pre-diabetes or diabetes.

It's worth asking for a GPs opinion.

I was pre-diabetic and getting it every month around my cycle, cut back the carbs and started doing exercise and it's completely gone.

itsureis · 02/11/2020 08:37

I don't eat a huge amount of carbs and also take regular exercise. I do have the coil fitted and am almost 50 so could be approaching the menopause and wondered if these were a factor.

After never getting it, I've had it probably 6 times this year so something isn't right.

Doctor phone appointment arranged for this morning so fingers crossed.

saracorona · 02/11/2020 08:42

I suffered years of thrush, antibiotics were a guaranteed to bring it on and would last for about 3/4 weeks. I used every cream known to science and would cry when I blistered. I'd heard about natural yoghurt but dismissed it as a myth. During a really bad flare up I gave in and bought it, if only for the cooling effect. The cooling relief was immediate and absolute heaven. Cured it, straightaway! I didn't get thrush again for years Had to take antibiotics, again yoghurt cured!

MsMiaWallace · 02/11/2020 08:45

@saracorona how did you apply the yogurt? Did you just put an amount inside & around?

Looks like I've got a flare up of the damn bird Angry

pinkbalconyrailing · 02/11/2020 08:47

if you get thrush regularly you might need to consider that your sexual partner also needs treatment.

also
wash underpants and bedding on a hot wash
wipe front to back when going to the toilet.

Bagelsandbrie · 02/11/2020 09:08

Other causes of recurrent thrush include anaemia, Addison’s disease and lupus. You can ask for bloods to rule these out. (I have all of these, unfortunately even with treatment for these conditions I still suffer with it constantly but at least I know why)!

funkylittleboatrace · 02/11/2020 09:50

I suffered with thrush for years it was getting me down, someone told me about a candida support supplement it worked for me I take one a day now and I haven't had a flare up in months. Normally I get a tingle which means it's coming every few weeks.

itsureis · 02/11/2020 16:27

Thanks ladies ....
With all your advice I could ask the appropriate questions to the doctor.

I now have a urine sample bottle, a swab kit and a bloods appointment on Wednesday 👍
