10 metre long garden? And north facing?

We have been to our site visit today as our house has had its foundations laid and we could get more of a feel for it. We were a bit concerned as we'd made our peace with the north facing garden as the plans showed it was double the length of the house, and a bit extra. It doesn't look it in person, whatsoever. We couldn't get that close, and there was a lot of mud and fencing etc but it looked small. I wasn't sure it would even be longer than the house. The site manager measured up and said it's around 10/11 metres long. It's really wide, about 30 metres so I'm not concerned about lack of space I'm concerned about lack of sun.

I knew it being north facing wouldn't be a sun trap, but I thought it was long enough that there will always be some sunshine. Even if it's just at the bottom of the garden. This was fine for me as meant kids can play in the shade but there will still be sunny spots.

10m long, behind a 110m2 house? Is it just going to be gloomy and dark and boggy Sad

We aren't having the garage so there will be more space where that is on the plans. We will add our own shed into the shadiest spot.

That looks closer to square to me.

I've just bought a 5 bed, 220m roughly but garage is integrated (double) so overall width of house plus parking may be similar. Our garden is 14m wide.

Did he maybe say 30ft?

Take the room measurements across the back 30m would be a very wide garden. Did you post about this house recently? It rings a bell.

Yes thinking maybe he said 10 metres, 30 feet, confusion has come from somewhere. Will wait for the email with the exact measurements. It just looked a really good size on the plans, we have gone with a small local developer and were chuffed we weren't getting the standard boxy new build garden but after today I'm so worried! I hope it's bigger than it looked.

Yes posted about north facing garden before askjng about sun and was reassured and happy as feedback was generally as long as the garden is long enough you'll get sun. Then I saw it today and it really didn't look long enough!!

If you've no garage then the right hand side will get loads of sun. The left will be sunny in the morning, and depending on what is to the right of you I'd expect the right to get late afternoon/evening sun.

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/10/2020 16:21

Sorry depending what is to the left..

Not being overlooked is a huge plus though.

I have a small north facing garden. There is some sun and some shade at all times of the day. Sun is mainly on grassed area during day and patio late afternoon/early evening. I like it. It means you can chose whether to be in shade or in direct sunlight depending on preference. You do get a lot of moss growing on patio though but a good clean in spring pretty much lasts through to the end of summer.

RaisinsRuinEverything · 27/10/2020 17:31

Could you use your front garden for sunbathing if the back garden isn’t sunny enough?

We've got a house with a north facing garden and it is fine in the summer when we want to use it, and shady in the winter. Line drying is a pain from end of September.
Planting wise our hydrangeas, hostas and helibores do very well and at the top of the garden we have a greenhouse which works fine (tomatoes grow fine in there). The kids trampoline has trashed the grass though! We have a patio immediately outside the house and a pond.

We've just exchanged on a house with another mainly north facing garden. Again a wrap around patio/paths and a small south facing area. I'm looking forward to having a bit of both.

My garden is North West and it's absolutely fine, quite long
