If you were in a hotel in a seaside town, would you allow a 13 year old and 7 year old to stay in the room

On their tablets while you and your dh looked round the shops for an hour/an hour and a half ?

The 13 year old is sensible
Has a phone
They get on v well and both well behaved ?

So you wouldn’t be far away
And contactable by phone
And they understand if the fire alarm goes off to leave the building a d call us

The hotel is in the town centre so we wouldn’t be far away

Yes of course.

But why would you want to go out in the lashing rain to look round shops anyway?

Plus a 7yo walking 20 miles a day! How??

Wouldn’t think twice about it.

*I would imagine this would violate the hotel’s health and safety policy and possibly invalidate their insurance.

That's some imagination you have there

Children (ie anyone under 18) are not usually allowed to stay in hotels unless an adult over 18 is present. I imagine this applies to the daytime as well as overnight.

Good god. That imagination again. Also, Premier Inn let you book and stay independently from 16!

@Lardlizard

Thanks for the replies and opinions
I wanted to let them stay and chill in the hotel and dh didn’t so we dragged them round with us
Makes me wonder when he will feel able to leave them as you have to start somewhere, as don’t want them to end up 18year old incapables

Your youngest is only 7! I don't think you need to panic about them ending up as 18yo incapables just yet.

Where you start is by leaving them at home for short periods first, or I would anyway. Mine are 13 and 10 and I leave them at home sometimes. I'd probably leave them in a hotel if I absolutely had to go somewhere and couldn't take them with me, but I wouldn't have done when the youngest was 7.

No, I would NOT. Especially if I was the owner of the hotel.

Why couldn't the 13 year old stay in the room? Confused

No. Dh and I would take turns going out instead.

"No, I would NOT. Especially if I was the owner of the hotel" 😂😂 why?!

Of course, it's fine! Why on earth wouldn't a 13yo be capable of watching a 7yo for an hour?

You in Cornwall OP? Was hammering down here!

I see you didn't do it in the end but I wouldn't have a problem with this at all. Like you say, need to start somewhere and 13 is more than old enough to cope with this, as long as the 7 year old was ok with it.

And under 18s can stay in hotels!! Teens first hols away from home with mates, are usually 16/17 so how would that work!!

What's the owner of the hotel got to do with it!

'It may invalidate the hotels insurance' No

'The hotel may call the police if they discover them [chilling for an hour with iPads and perfectly happy]' No

Source : 20 years in the hotel industry.

If you think they are sensible and can be trusted and the little one would listen to the big one then it's totally up to you OP. I would.

No I wouldn't, but I am overly cautious.

Definitely, unless the 13 year old was generally irresponsible

I would not want this were I running a hotel. I don't doubt for one second your 13 year old is sensible and able to call if needed, but they are not all 13 year olds.

Nonsense.

Premier Inns, for example, allow you to stay alone at age sixteen.

You start by leaving them , or at least the older one for an hour or 2 in their own home .

Ha ha ha can’t stop laughing at social services getting involved and invalidating hotel
Insurances...oh my god!!!l

We were left at home alone when my brother was 10 and I was 8 as my mum had to work part time. My dad worked shifts so sometimes he was in bed between shifts. If she s didn’t work, we didn’t eat.

Yes unless the seaside town is Blackpool then definitely not.
