What would you put in a 'cleaning hamper'?

My goddaughter is at university and this is what she has asked at for xmas (!). I'm a total slattern in comparison so I've no idea! I thought some cute packaged cleaning things and maybe a few nice smelling incense sticks or candles but would they be permitted? What do I put them in?

Minkys, scrub daddy, Mrs Hinchs book

ladygracie · 26/10/2020 20:55

No candles or incense unless you’ve checked she is allowed them. My daughter isn’t - they can’t even have battery fairy lights, only plug in ones.

I am equally slattern-like but I do love method cleaning products. They smell really lovely.

@Elizaaa

There are plenty better things to be doing than cleaning. Especially at 18-22.
Depends on your priorities, personality and what you like doing, surely?

I am getting pretty fed up with this attitude on MN that anyone who cleans or who is even remotely house-proud clearly has nothing better to do with their time.

Is there anything wrong with people liking different things?

CaffeineInfusion · 26/10/2020 21:33

Astonish degreaser. Perfect for all students! You can leave oven trays for a week, spritz with this and it's clean in half a minute.

My inner slob gives this 10/10🙊

Oh give over The OP has asked a question, either answer it or ignore, I t 🙄 Pathetic response
wendz86 · 26/10/2020 21:41

Fabulosa stuff is popular at the moment.
Reed diffuser might be better than candles etc for halls.

Athenajm80 · 26/10/2020 22:12

I was trying to make something similar but for me, and natural things.

I discovered this site www.charlesbentley.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=marine+conservation+society

And cleanmyspace.com/cleaning-kit-essentials/

Also lots of ideas on www.lifenreflection.com/natural-diy-cleaning-kit/ with instructions on how to make your own cleaning products.

One thing I've picked up that I never knew before is how useful denture tablets are. They have made my metal water bottles actually feel totally clean and fresh.

CareerFuckerUpper · 26/10/2020 23:01

Wow thank you for all the replies! Honestly she is an absolutely amazing kid who does love her nights out etc but also is mega tidy I'm not I've heard of pink stuff, will check that out definitely
Great idea about microfibre cloths etc thank you. Honestly as a 19 year old student I would have been Hmm at this sort of gift but it's what she wants!
I just want to make it a bit special. These suggestions are fab Smile

And yes she's in halls so I'll rule out smelly candles etc

Funky washing up brush and gloves. I have seen some disco diva ones on Amazon

Excited101 · 26/10/2020 23:13

Funky scourers, you can often get shiny and holographic ones from Sainsbury’s.

Tamingofthehamster · 26/10/2020 23:15

Sticky stuff - to remove stickers etc. Squeegy

Quaagars · 26/10/2020 23:19

Ooh, maybe she's a Hincher Grin

If so

  • a Minky cloth
  • Elbow Grease
  • tub of The Pink Stuff
  • a few different fragrances of Zoflora
burglarbettybaby · 26/10/2020 23:20

I follow Mrs hinch

Elbow grease spray (amazing)
Zoflora (midnight bloom)
White vinegar soda crystals

Oh, give over lol.
OP just asked for ideas, not sniffiness.
You don't like cleaning, so? I need motivating half the time to be fair
Doesn't mean everyone else has to follow suit and not like just because you don't though.
Each to their own, unhoick your judgy pants

Quaagars · 26/10/2020 23:24

Forgot Scrub Daddies scourers!
They're usually in places like B and M and Home Bargains.

DisappointedOfNorfolk · 26/10/2020 23:32

In student halls, I'd go for Flash kitchen cleaner (it can clean the mankiest of student kitchens, the degreaser in it is fab!), Viakal for limescale on taps/shower, and useful for 'stuck' swivel plugs too, Harpic original 100% limescale if she's in a hard water area, Mr Muscle window cleaner, Mr Sheen furniture polish and Dettol bathroom cleaner... and some (lots of) washable cloths, but definitely not microfibre if you are going eco friendly on your products... using microfibre cloths is awful for the environment!

MiniMum97 · 26/10/2020 23:55

I would recommend including this bathroom sponge:

www.lakeland.co.uk/25285/Bath-%26-Tile-Scrub

And these rubber gloves:

www.lakeland.co.uk/21178/Small-Deluxe-Moisturising-Washing-Up-Gloves

Because they are amazing and no home should be without them.

The rubber gloves and comfortable, hypoallergenic. And last forever.

The bath sponge is very effective with minimal effort and again lasts forever.

Staples of any cleaning hamper!

glassshoes · 27/10/2020 00:09

Agree with the pink stuff! The only cleaning product I've ever been properly wowed by

thewitchesofprestwick · 27/10/2020 00:15

Is this a form of escapism? At that age, it was the last thing on my mind, and I can’t think of any of my contemporaries who were interested in this sort of thing either. Find some nice things for her (not candles or incense), but also be willing to listen.

She's asked for cleaning stuff, though. So why not get what she's asked for? The Hinching craze obviously passed you by lol. I read the OP with "ooh, maybe she's a Hincher" lol. Perfectly normal thing to ask for
user626847 · 27/10/2020 00:24

I'd go for eco stuff. Solid dishwashing soap bar, bamboo soap dish, coconut scrubbers, reuseable kitchen roll.

thewitchesofprestwick · 27/10/2020 02:11

I don’t understand it. At all. Do women that are into this not feel they are worth more than a basket of chemicals from the supermarket. If someone had bought me a present as basic as cleaning products as a present I’d have assumed it was a joke.

lyralalala · 27/10/2020 02:18

@PleasantVille

Do you know what she's planning on cleaning? If it's a shared student house I'd probably go to B & M and get one of each spray cleaner, toilet cleaner, clothes and rubber gloves. I wouldn't be spending a lot on nice products unless she was in her own home
What a bizarre distinction to make. Even if it’s a shared house it’s still her home...
myusernamewastakenbyme · 27/10/2020 02:35

I'd just go to Home Bargains cleaning aisle...you will get loads for your money....I wouldnt bother with Lakeland...way overpriced.
