Best way to heat up a single room

I am working from home for the foreseeable future. With colder temperatures coming I don't want to have the heating on all day, and I'm looking for the most economical gadget to heat up only the room where I'm working from.

What are your recommendations? We are thinking alone the lines of:

  • Oil-filled radiator.
  • Calor gas heater.

We have a cat, if that's a factor.

TIA

Oil filled radiator - once the room has heated up, turn it down so it's on low to maintain the temperature and keep the door closed.

Or a heated blanket for you. ?

From experience a calor gas heater will make everything damp and you definitely need a window open to provide sufficient ventilation. They are a greater fire risk IMO than an oil filled radiator - which would be my choice out the two options.

Oil filled radiator and place cat on your lap.

Bargebill19 · 26/10/2020 13:19

Surely the cat will be on the keyboard?!

Sometimes heating one room with a secondary source is no cheaper than having the central heating on for the whole house and adjusting the radiators so they're on low in the rooms you're not using, because its a more efficient heat source.

We've owned 2 houses where we've lived through a winter before we had central heating put in and in both cases the calor gas heater or single gas fire cost about the same as the installed system but the former was a poorer way of heating a house.

I just leave the central heating set on it's normal 'house empty in the daytime' setting and press the boost button for an hour when I feel cold, so a couple of times a day. Also make sure I have jumper and slippers on, and maybe wrist warmers.

Oil filled definitely. Nice warm curtains, lap blanket, cosy socks, draft excluder by door.

I use a 0.5kw Convection heater in my office and as long as I keep my door shut I only need it on for part of the day.

Hot water bottles - one on your lap and another under your feet (in socks). Cheaper than heating all the air in the room.

And wear a hat. Grin

Good slipper, thick socks and a blanket

Smallsteps88 · 26/10/2020 14:32

Wear layers. Thermal vest, socks etc.

Electric blanket on low on the seat you work from.

Hard bottomed slippers to keep your feet off the floor.

Wear fingerless gloves.

Rugs on the floor

Heavy curtains.

Hot water bottle.

Tea/coffee.

And one of those swivelling halogen heaters. Cosy as hell.

Smallsteps88 · 26/10/2020 14:36

A hot shower and breakfast to start off your internal heating in the morning.

Are you getting an allowance from your employers? If not you can claim tax relief of £6 a week which for a basic rate payer is approx £60 a year.

Ghouliet · 26/10/2020 14:58

Using an oil filled radiator to heat my conservatory does this to the cat.

I have no idea on the cost mind only that my cat is toasty and approves.

Iamthewombat · 26/10/2020 15:15

Oil filled radiator all the way. Calor gas smells and is a MASSIVE faff with gas bottles. Plus, as a PP notes, you need to ventilate loads, which rather defeats the object.

optimisticpessimist01 · 26/10/2020 15:28

Oil filled heater. I used to work in a small, but incredible cold office in a warehouse and the room was always nice and toasty with the oil heater on. We used to have a normal blowy electric one and it was shocking in comparison

DennisTMenace · 26/10/2020 15:52

Have you considered under floor heating? Only do if you are happy to rip up the existing flooring, so not actually going to save you money if you are only there 6 months. We put it in when kitchen being done and my goodness I love it. Would do in the rest of the rooms if had the cash

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/10/2020 15:55

I wear slippers and keep a hot water bottle on my lap. I prefer that to heating - I find even low level heating makes me feel a little sluggish.

Thank you all for your responses, incredibly helpful - from the verdict on radiators to alternatives like boosting the CH, hot water bottles, blankets, etc.
