Bath mat that doesn't go mouldy

BugCatcher879 · 26/10/2020 11:07

Or am I doing something wrong with my bath mats?

Any recommendations? Thanks

Are you hanging it to dry after use? How often do you wash it?

MrsR87 · 26/10/2020 11:15

I’ve never had one go mouldy, even though our bathrooms and bedrooms are very humid. Do you hang it once it’s been used? Is it on a carpet or hard floor?

Hang it up to dry after using and wash each week with towels. We just have a cotton one that is like a slightly thicker towel

Do you mean the anti-slip things that go inside the bath or the cloth mats that go outside the bath?

PARunnerGirl · 26/10/2020 11:16

Yeah, same advice as previous poster. A bathmat needs to be picked up after every use and hung over the shower/ side of bath/ towel rail to dry. Mine go into a hot wash once a week.

We have ones that are like a thick towel, and just wash them weekly. I leave it on the floor to dry after a shower then hang over the side of the bath.

Good question @Dilbertian! I’ve never had a bath mat go mouldy but those anti slip mat things can get a bit gross I think.

One of these. They dry out so fast

Bathmat or anti-slip mat?

Get a cotton terrycloth bathmat. Hang it up after every use (or after every batch of uses if several people shower/bathe in a row). Hot wash it with the other towels (at least once a week).

I've never had a mouldy bath mat either and we once lived in a house where black mouldy walls were everywhere and we'd to bin our now white and green furry mould backed furniture when we left.

Perhaps there's mould spores in your bathroom that keep attaching to the new mats? I'd suggest you go fucking nuts with the bleach one day. Clean every inch of the room so nothing can grow there ever again. Then make sure you hang your mat up after use. I sucker mine to the tiles just to get it out the way so I can rinse the bath out and leave it there but if you don't want it on display like that then a rail or something might suit?

KihoBebiluPute · 26/10/2020 11:21

If you mean the in-bath non-slip thing then you need to spray both sides with daily shower spray a couple of times a week. If you mean the one next to the bath that you step out onto then just hanging it up should do the trick.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 26/10/2020 11:36

At the end of the shower whilst the shower is still running I lift the anti-slip mat, turn the shower head to the intense blast setting, hold it up and blast the whole thing, the sucker side.

Then I stick the top bit to the wall and everything drains down. It doesn't go mouldy that way but you need to be doing this, if not daily then a couple of times a week otherwise all the soap scum and hair gets caught in the suckers.

If you've got a hard floor, I'd ditch the mat and have a duckboard. Our mats went mouldy, now the water evaporates off the floor under the board instead of the mat.
