What do I want for my 40th birthday?

Me and DH don’t do big and expensive for birthdays as don’t have that sort of money spare to spend on ourselves.
I don’t do designer stuff bags etc as will only wreck them, don’t do expensive jewellery as will lose it, or just don’t wear it on a day to day basis, travel is obviously off for the forseeable, trying to lose weight so don’t want want nice clothes,
They all seem to be the things that people normally suggest.
He’s asking me for ideas and I know his mum and sister will also be asking him for ideas.

Bluetooth headphones or a speaker? We got a Bose speaker for around £100, and it’s really good. I got some cheap and cheerful bud things, which are surprisingly good, too.

A day out? Or an experience?
Coffee machine
Tea set/mug
Boots/shoes/trainers
Make up
Phone/gadget

A coat
Boots
Fancy make up or perfume - something you'll use every day but wouldn't normally treat yourself to
A posh meal out somewhere

A nice watch?

What are your interests/ hobbies or just things you would like to do but never have the time for? So some lovely expensive wool if you like to knit ( or other craft materials).
If you play golf a new set of clubs or outfit.
If you like to walk the dog; a comfortable pair of winter boots or a lovely, practical coat which is more expensive than you would buy usually. Doesn't have to be designer stuff.
You need to give us some clues here.

It was my 40th yesterday....I suggest trying to think of something or you'll end up like I did!! I had told my hubby I would love some more knitting needles, like one of the posh sets, and he'd said no so I stopped suggesting things. He then pestered me, I said I don't know and I got a box of retro 80s sweets and a teddy from my fave film. I feel really ungrateful cos the teddy was ridiculously expensive for the size (I know he amazon primed last min) and the sweets....they're more his thing as I'm more a chocolate lady! He bought for the sake of buying.

I've just bought myself the harry potter knitting book and a bag to store all my knitting bits in, I enjoy knitting and have made lots of hats, scarves, gloves and blankets for our baby and older kids. Like I say I feel really ungrateful and would never tell him how I feel, but I feel as though my birthday was a non event because he wouldn't buy me what I wanted and I got stuff I would never choose myself. The teddy is cute but I would never buy it....certainly not at the price he paid, and him and the kids will most likely eat most of the sweets cos I won't.

I asked for (and got) this blanket:

I’m the same as you OP so I tend to ask for things I’d like but wouldn’t really get round to buying myself. Like my main hobby is probably playing computer games (I know I know!) and we do buy through the year but only on sale. So I ask for a full price one I’d never normally spend £50 on.

Boots / trainers you need but wouldn’t normally get such expensive ones maybe. I was after DMs for ages but I was horrified how expensive they were - I remember being a teenager and them being about £50 so I had those one year and my dream trainers - Air Jordan III’s another!

Can you think of something you’d use but wouldn’t really buy yourself? I’ve always wanted a rice cooker but I’ve always had other stuff to spend our money on but now I REALLY want one so I think I’m going to ask for a decent one for my birthday rather than a £30 Lidl cheapy!

A piece of original art
A special chair just for you if you like to sit and read or sew or similar
To have your colours done, personal shopper experience or professional make up lesson
Really nice gloves or scarf
Class in cake decorating or a craft you’ve always wanted to try
Air pods

youdidask · 26/10/2020 09:46

Noise cancelling headphones- I love mine

Eminybob · 26/10/2020 09:48

I got an Apple Watch for my 40th. I’d wanted one for ages so asked and got. DH also had an afternoon tea delivered to the door for me (my birthday was during lockdown)

jamiejamiejamie · 26/10/2020 10:00

Cashmere jumper, always my birthday treat.

ShowOfHands · 26/10/2020 10:06

I'm turning 40 this year too and I don't drink or wear make up or perfume, no real interest in fashion and grooming and I don't eat sweets/chocolate.

I've suggested any of the below:
A dressing gown
Retro roller boots
A ride on a steam train
A speaker
Some ridiculous dungarees I want

wowfudge · 26/10/2020 10:09

If you're trying to lose weight what about an exercise mat, some weights, a waterproof jacket for walks outside. Things to motivate you to move more.

BrieAndChilli · 26/10/2020 11:03

I think @ShowOfHands has it - roller skates!!

Thanks for all the suggestions
I like cake decorating but spent several years building up kit so don’t really need anything for that.
MIL gets me my perfume every Christmas but I still have last years unopened as haven’t been wearing perfume this year due to lockdown!
Have walking boots, gym kit, mat, decent coat etc as help with scouts and DH likes to drag us up mountains.
I’d never care for a cashmere jumper! It would end up wrecked as would accidentally Chuck it in with the rest of the mountain of laundry by mistake.
Did a make up class last year, bought a few bits but don’t really do the whole make up thing, normally Chuck on foundation, blusher, neutral eyeshadow and mascara. So posh make up would be wasted on me.
Really really fussy with clothes/footwear and Always hate what people buy me.
Hopefully buying a house in the next 6 months so nothing house/decor related as no idea what new house will be like.

Don’t really have any hobbies. I make cakes for birthdays etc. Other than that it’s work, cooking dinner, ferrying kids around and slumping on sofa at end of day to watch a bit of tv and do a sudoku. Weekends are housework, laundry and DH dragging us out for a hike. I do a bootcamp class twice a week but I don’t class that as a hobby!!!
