Please can you give me an idea of how much allowance you give your young teens? Also, how do you give it to them? Cash or bank account and they have a debit card?

Many thanks

Hello. I don't give them any allowance at all. If they offer to do a job for me ie cut the grass, clean the bathroom, then I will pay them a few quid (either cash or into account, whichever they prefer). I make it clear that there is always always work available within the home that I will pay them for, then it's up to them if they want to be proactive and earn some. They go through spells of helping more if they are actively saving up for something they want. Smile

Ds is 16. He gets £10 per week pocket money plus £20 per week clothes, books & equipment allowance (he’s studying a practical subject at college).

I also give him bus fayre & lunch money for college days.

It goes into his bank account.

Dd is 15. She has a Nationwide account with a debit card and her spending is not monitored in any way.
She gets £20 a month as she has nothing to buy at the moment. If she was a clothes/nails/hair /makeup purchaser, I would be giving her more to reflect her shopping preferences. I buy her toiletries and pay for her phone.

DS is 13 and can earn up to £15 a week from me. I put it into his bank account and he has a debit card. He has to buy any branded stuff he wants from that. I'll supply the basics and if he wants any more he has to top it up. I don't just bung him £20 every time he wants to go out with his mates etc, he is expected to budget for things from this money. If he's spent it all on Vbucks then it would be tough luck. He usually has between £200-£300 in his bank account at any time.

I pay his phone bill and lunch money separately.

Monthly standing order into Nationwide account.
Started with a cashcard only, moved up to one that can be used as a debit card.

Amount depends on what you expect them to pay for, and level of independent socialising.

DS(16) gets £10 a week allowance and has a couple small jobs (waiting in the local pub when we're not in a global pandemic, mowing lawns, washing cars etc)

We also pay his gym membership, phone contract and provide basic toiletries, haircuts and all food for packed lunches etc.

At 16 we also discussed with him and now pay his child benefit directly to him. The understanding was that we did not expect to be paying for underwear, pads of paper, guitar strings etc. It's been fascinating to see him get to grips with budgeting regularly and making wise spending decisions (or not!)

All money now is paid directly into his bank account which he has a debit card for. He's also a big user of internet banking. He always has some cash from his little old ladies but normally ends up paying a sum into his account as he has little use for physical cash.

I give 16 yr old ds £30 monthly for doing certain chores but also pay his fares to college and lunch money. His dad pays him £50 (we live separately). We both pay in to his account. He is quite good at saving his money but does spend money on a bit of junk food and occasional vodka (which I store in the car boot and only allow at weekends).
