Books for 4 year old

Hi does anyone have any recommendations for short chapter books for a 4 year old? We have read some Roald Dahl - the Twits & George’s Marvellous medicine which she loved. It would be good to move on from picture books but am struggling to find longer books that are suitable for little children. Any advice would be great! Thanks

Looking for similar. I thought Winnie the Pooh might be nice as it still has some pictures.

Claude books by Alex T Smith

If you can to a physical bookshop like Waterstones, or to a library which allows browsing, there's a whole genre of children's books like this. As they learn to read, they can often read them themselves too. For adults, many are rather repetitive and formulaic, but the children seem to love them.

The owl who was afraid of the dark is a classic, lovely story and nice line drawn pictures

Thanks Aroundtheworldin80moves - the Claude books are a great idea.

I always think the Winnie the Pooh books are a bit old-fashioned and wordy but maybe I should have another look.

Really I want something like Roald Dahl that’s not Roald Dahl....

I tried Winnie the Pooh and had to stop, I didn't like it at all.

The BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory went down well. We've also read Up the Faraway Tree - Blighton, The about Who Grew Dragons - Shephard.

Bunnicula is also nice, it's about a vampire bunny (not scary). Unsure of the author.

At the moment we read two picture books and I make sure to point to the words and then switch to The Wind in the Willows which is old fashioned with very flowery vocab but it sends him to sleep nicely plus I really enjoy reading it out loud. I feel like it's doing me good!

Others on my to-read list are:

The Sheep Pig (babe)
Hodgeheg
Charlottes Web

Sorry that should read: The Boy Who Grew Dragons
