Toothpaste

Hi, This is my first post on Mumsnet and i just wanted to say how helpful it has been already. For around 2 years, my husband has been under a specialist for a mouth problem. The initial problem was with a continous salty taste, sometime so strong it made him feel sick. Then every morning the inside of his mouth would peel. Sounds gross, but he could pull long strings of skin out at a time. Although this was happening, luckily his mouth was never sore. After seeing the specialist again this week who said unfortunately it looked like something he would have to live with, I turned to google. Here, a post came up from 2015 on Mumsnet suggesting it could be his toothpast. After researching further i fould it could be caused by an ingredient SLS. So, desperate to try anything, i went and got some Sensodyne toothpaste which is SLS free. For the first time in over 2 years, no peeling skin. He could'nt believe it. Also, whethere it is a coincidence or just wishfull thinking, the salty taste, althogh still present, is not half as bad as it usually is.
So thank you for your site, and to the previous post. My husband is now a happy man.

I have that peeling skin reaction to SLS in toothpaste too. Original Sensodyne is like a Godsend (and also for my son who gets mouth ulcers from SLS).

Mumsnet is so helpful for general information like this Smile.

Just cannot believe all those appointments with the hospital and it all boiled down to a tube of toothpaste.

Incredible that no doctor/consultant ever considered toothpaste! Glad to hear the problem is solved (maybe the salty taste will disappear completely in time).

SLS (sodium laureth/lauryl sulphate) makes the toothpaste foam, it's a strong cleaning agent. It's in almost every cleansing skin product. It can be really irritating especially if you have sensitive skin or eczema. I no longer use shampoos with it and have seen a massive difference in my hair.

Omg this stringy thing happens to me too! I never knew what ingredient caused it but I knew it was from toothpaste or something. I always use alternate toothpastes and mouthwashes and never bothered to narrow it down!

Great to know what it's from!
