Bit obscure but....does anyone know anything about Welsh blankets?!

I've inherited one and been doing some research to try and find out which mill it came from. It doesn't seem to be Derw or Tregwynt, and I've searched the internet and can't find one the same pattern. It's 1970s or prior as I can remember it being on the family member's bed when I was small. Pics attached of both sides in the hope someone might be able to solve my mystery!!

Try googling Trefriw.

Nice blanket. It also get called 'carthen'.

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2020 11:57

gets not get.

Carthen also means sheet or tarpaulin - so I don't really like it as a term - seems a bit cringy.

You could also look up 'Brethyn Cartref'.

It's in the Conwy valley, which is scenic. I have no connections with the woollen mill other than remember going there as a child.

Seeing as I'm on a roll here. Trefriw is pronounced TREV-Rewe (rhymes with ewe).

I want a blanket.

Entrant6 · 24/10/2020 12:03

This is my Trefriw blanket. The pattern doesn’t look the same as yours OP

I know nothing about welsh blankets but just want to say what a gorgeous blanket and what a nice thing to inherit. Now I'll have to add a woolen mill to the things I want to do when we go to Wales after Covid-19!

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2020 12:19

Entrant6's blanket is very 'Trefriw', OP's probably isn't.

Thelnebriati · 24/10/2020 12:21

You sometimes see them on Ebay and they fetch awful prices, you also sometimes see coats and ponchos made from the fabric.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/10/2020 12:34

I have loads of blankets from my Granny. One's honeycomb and the others look like they might be Narberth from a quick Google. I imagine they're all at least 60 years old.

Handsnotwands · 24/10/2020 12:37

There’s a lovely lady called Jane beck who’s got a shop

You could ask her?

Mine was from Trefriw, it was a wedding present to us 40 years ago. It's a similar design to yours but mostly red and black.

hesterstanhope · 24/10/2020 12:39

I think it is the pattern F blanket originally made at Trefriw around 1950. This design was then adopted by other Carmarthenshire mills.

Jen Jones supplies blankets to Prince Charles and has some similar ones on her website.

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2020 12:55

Labour and Wait have some similar ones listed but are out of stock. You could ask them. Or you could google 'welsh woollen mills' and check them out. Harlech, Narberth etc.

Melin Tregwynt and Jane Beck and so on are more likely to have modern designs.

I had one and it went on ebay. I had been given some beautiful italian woolen blankets, so something had to go.

Back in the 1970s the 'brethyn cartref' on my bed was so old fashioned whemn my friends had continental quilts.

Thanks all, plenty of suggestions for a bit more research!

Beautiful blanket! We have one in red and blue which spends 9 out of 12 months on my bed.

Austereorange · 24/10/2020 22:22

I’m welsh.

I’d suggest asking by email the welsh culture centre - Nant Gwytheryn -

They have access to loads of local information and would be happy to help your research I’m
