Just arrived for a week in Frome, can any local Mumsnetters, or anyone with local knowledge help with activities for the week? Longleat is fully booked, nothing on at the cinema (that i want to watch). There's me, DH and DDs (12 and 10). Thank you Smile

National Trust property and gardens called Stourhead. Also a nice lake close by called Shearwater with a lovely walk to a place called heaven's gate.

Livedandlearned · 23/10/2020 22:16

Stourhead is lovely

TheNestedIf · 23/10/2020 22:21

You're about 30 - 45 minutes away from:

Clarks Shopping Village
Wookey Hole
Cheddar Gorge

Wookey looks bookable. The caves at Cheddar Gorge are closed but it's still a nice area to visit and The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company is still doing tours if you book in advance.

Hope you have a nice holiday.

Sittinbythesea · 23/10/2020 22:21

Stourhead - you have to book though. Frome isn’t really a holiday place, a day trip to Bath? What sort of things do you like doing?

Madcats · 23/10/2020 22:22

We walked round Stourhead today. You might manage to pre-book tickets for mid week. It seemed busier than usual today!

elephantoverthehill · 23/10/2020 22:23

Check out Bristol

movingonup20 · 23/10/2020 22:24

Bristol is nice but prebook museums

Sittinbythesea · 23/10/2020 22:26

You could walk up Cley hill or the white horse at westbury.

FeatherySquawkington · 23/10/2020 22:27

SS Great Britain was a brilliant afternoon out, Bristol.

PepperPotty · 23/10/2020 22:34

Frome is lovely! I live not far away. DH and I were there today and had brunch at The Settle - nice little tea room.

Agree Stourhead is lovely. If you have national trust memberships there’s also Prior Park in Bath and Dyrham Park a bit further. The Bath skyline walk is good and free.

Also yes to Cheddar Gorge and Wells. I think the Bishop’s Palace in Wells have some half term things on.

A bit closer to Frome are Mells (super quaint village with a walled garden, pub, cafe) and Great Elm (a nice walk along the old ironworks).

Cley Hill is a fun walk (near longleat).

There’s a farm shop in Beckington near Frome, plus one in Farrington Gurney where they’re doing pumpkin picking etc over half term.

Bath Soft Cheese is a bit different with a cafe overlooking a cheese making area.

Loads of stuff to do/shopping in Bristol and Bath too, or a trip to Weston-Super-Mare if you fancy the seaside, bit more of a trek though.

YogaLite · 23/10/2020 22:34

A 22mile trip to Glastonbury perhaps?
The Tor, Abbey ruins, strangely atmospheric town and yes, the Clarks shopping village.

makingmiracles · 23/10/2020 22:35

In frome you’ve got Valis vale, a nice walk along a river and through wooded areas, if you walk along far enough you end up in tedbury.

Your about an hour from Farrington gurney, farrington farm shop is lovely and they usually have a pumpkin picking event this time of year, just down the road is cheddar gorge, as above poster said, caves are closed but the gorge is an interesting walk around and the tour bus might still be running-not sure. 20 mins on from cheddar you’ve got wooky hole, expensive but you could spend the whole day there.
You got Glastonbury tor, lovely walk with great views, several nature reserves on the outskirts of Glastonbury.
About 1.5 hrs away you’ve got puxton park on the outskirts of Worle(WSM) which is a nice attraction, play areas, Birds of prey and other animals.

Frome has a train station so could go on a train ride up to bath or Bristol.

Curlygirl06 · 23/10/2020 22:35

Nunney castle isn't far from there.
St Alfred's tower isn't too far away I believe.
Bristol zoo.
There's a big display place/ museum on the harbourside at Bristol but i can't remember what it's called.
Stonehenge is close ish but you need to book.

Hope that helps.

PepperPotty · 23/10/2020 22:38

If the kids get bored Writhlington Sports Centre (about 20 min away) are doing some activities, like a giant inflatable course. They also have a climbing wall. I don’t know whether they have anything like that at the sports centre in Frome.

weehoo · 23/10/2020 22:38

The Newt near Bruton is absolutely stunning. Kilver Court at Shepton Mallet is fab too - you could do both in a single day trip.

cheeseismydownfall · 23/10/2020 22:39

Wardour Castle is great and not too far, although the one way system will limit the potential for games of hide and seek.

Mrbay · 23/10/2020 22:47

Check out original wild - lots of water based activities.

Wiltshire Outdoor Learning do high ropes and other similar activities in Brookerswood which is 15 mins from Frome.

There's the Hope Nature Centre in Trowbridge, but I think that might be a bit young for your children (I love it and I'm 33 so..)

Depending how far you are wanting to travel there is Noah Ark Farm which is 1.5hrs from Frome but a small zoo.

If you like walking there is Vallis and also Mels is a village close by which is lovely to walk around. Oh and the castle, well what is left of it, in Nunney.

Frome is lovely - get a take away from the Thai Kitchen they do the best Pad Thai!
