Supermarket petrol?

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 23/10/2020 21:06

Someone said on here years ago they never buy supermarket petrol... only ever Shell / Texaco etc. For some unknown reason I've stuck to it religiously ever since! Does anyone else do this? Do you believe certain petrol is a better quality?

I only ever get supermarket stuff as those garages are closer to me

Rainbowllama4 · 23/10/2020 21:09

I use supermarket fuel as it’s the closest to me, I have a high performance car (not bragging) and it’s been fine, my father has always told me not to use it, he prefers to do an 18 mile round trip to get fuel.

DramaAlpaca · 23/10/2020 21:11

I go to whichever filling station or supermarket is cheapest.

PawPawNoodle · 23/10/2020 21:11

I too have a high performance car and I'm quite happy with supermarket petrol (I used to do a lot of milage so wasn't going to splash out at Shell every time). Sometimes I put some Redex in the tank and every now and then I treat him to a tank of premium petrol, if he's been good.

Floralnomad · 23/10/2020 21:12

I’m sure petrol is petrol , I get the same mileage per gallon whether it’s from Tesco , Costco or Esso . I’m also a fairly high mileage driver and my cars always last well - the last one had done 160,000 miles when the gear box went .

MiddleClassMother · 23/10/2020 21:15

I'm terrible at filling up my car, I don't ever do it until the fuel light is flashing and says please refuel. I go to whichever is closest, I live quite rural so it's often a supermarket in the next town. There is a high performance fuel (at about 1.5x the cost) a closer distance to me, but the opposite way to my work. I've noticed no difference in fuel qualities, even on high performance cars like the one I drive now. DH is adamant in fuelling with only high performance though. He has a high performance car too.

TooManyDogsandChildren · 23/10/2020 21:44

I don't live near a supermarket which does fuel but if I did I'd be there all the time purely on grounds of price. I don't believe there is a specially crap version of petrol produced for supermarkets!

WildRosie · 23/10/2020 21:47

I spoke to a vehicle mechanic chum about this once. He dismissed the notion of supermarket petrol being inferior quality as nonsense, adding that it all comes from the same hole. I've been buying Morrison's petrol for the best part of twenty years with no problems.

thirstyformore · 23/10/2020 21:48

What's a high performance car? I always wonder. I have a company car so don't really care what goes on it.....it's not mine! Generally go for whatever is the cheapest

Coldwinds · 23/10/2020 21:50

My dh has a high pro car, I have a standard one for the kids Hmm but we use supermarket petrol. We’ve never had any engine issues

One that makes a ridiculous amount of noise, gives you whip lash, uncomfortable seats and causes many rows over how stupidly expensive it is to run Wink
2tired2bewitty · 23/10/2020 21:54

Dh maintains that ‘branded’ petrol has extra additives that keep the engine cleaner. Having said that 99% of the time both cars get supermarket stuff, with the occasional half tank of the good stuff if we’re caught short on the motorway.

bloodywhitecat · 23/10/2020 21:55

Doesn't all fuel sold in the UK have to meet a minimum standard, I am pretty sure it does. The branded names add some extra twinkly bits to their fuels and it makes a very small difference to the mpg when I run my car on supermarket fuel but it is only about .1 or .2mpg less than on branded stuff.

Burnthurst187 · 23/10/2020 21:55

Some ppl believe that supermarket fuel is of a lower quality. I have and always will fuel up at supermarkets as they're the cheapest

LeroyJenkinssss · 23/10/2020 22:00

I got chatting to a petrol tank driver and apparently there is a difference based on the additives that get, well, added. So whilst it starts out the same there is a difference between ‘branded’ and supermarket stuff.

Having said that, I tried the pricier stuff for a month and noted no difference in fuel efficiency. It may possibly make my engine run longer but I’m a terrible car owner so I don’t think in the end it’ll make an appreciable difference - and certainly not at that price!

Bluebelltulip · 23/10/2020 22:01

My DH used to only buy shell premium now he goes to wherever is most convenient.

Bluntness100 · 23/10/2020 22:03

Op it’s the same stuff, made to a specific standard and made by the oil majors.

Bluntness100 · 23/10/2020 22:04

There isn’t, he was bullshitting you and the drivers don’t know.

Pedallleur · 23/10/2020 22:06

Friend of mine worked in a garage and said different tankers e.g. Shell or BP came to restock the garage. Engineer colleague tho only used branded as his cars ran better. Not that he kept his cars long!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 23/10/2020 22:13

Supermarket petrol is fine. They have to meet the same standards as every other supplier - there's only so many refineries in the UK producing for these suppliers anyway.

BigFatLiar · 23/10/2020 22:19

Supermarkets don't have their own refineries they just bulk buy so its basically petrol/diesel same as any other.

grassgreenthisside · 23/10/2020 22:19

My dad told me years ago to mix it up and go to different places. Each place has a set "recipe" and a car can benefit from the different addictives rather than a repeat of the same

Bluntness100 · 23/10/2020 22:21

They really don’t have their own recipe, other than the more high grade stuff. 😂

Supermarkets don’t produce their own fuel. Think about it. They don’t own refineries. They buy it from thr majors and it all meets British standards.

grassgreenthisside · 23/10/2020 22:23

I think he meant supermarkets fall into one category, Shell another ect ect

Obviously Tesco does not own a oil refinery Grin

Bluntness100 · 23/10/2020 22:29

So it’s the same stuff right,,,😂
