Inspired by Marcus Rashford, cafes and restaurants around the country offer free school meals

Apologies if there is another thread on this....I searched and couldn't see one.

After the government voted against feeding hungry kids 🙄, councils, restaurants and cafes up and down the country have been pledging to supply packed lunches for any child in need during half term, no questions asked. Delighted to see my local council on there.

Marcus Rashford has been really active on Twitter today thanking these businesses and asking them to use the hashtag EndChildFoodPoverty so he can track and retweet pledges.

What an amazing guy 😍😍

Really positive to see so many businesses supporting this. I'm making a mental note of any local to me, we can thank them for their efforts with our business.

I’ve just heard this in the news. Marcus Rashford is an amazing individual and those cafes are also awesome.
Our Govt in the other hand Hmm I can’t believe we live in a country where vouchers are given to Eat out to Help Out, yet some dc will go hungry during the holidays.

Gazelda · 23/10/2020 18:58

I'm making a mental note to visit all the local cafes and retailers offering this. I'll do it after half term though, they're going to have a very busy week!
Even our local greengrocer is getting involved - offering parcels of fruit and veg to kids. No voucher needed, just turn up and ask.

I wonder if they could adopt a 'pay it forward' system so I can pay for a kids lunch when I make my purchase?

I hope unscrupulous people don't take advantage though.

SandysMam · 23/10/2020 19:00

This is exactly what the government want though, someone else solving it so they don’t have to.

Good on them though.

SandysMam · 23/10/2020 19:00

The cafes that is! Not the Government!

Rashford's free meal tweets made into Google map www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-54665707

Here is a map of all the places taking part. The person who set up the map is doing it manually I think.....

I think anyone trying to take advantage of this will be in need. Nobody is going to pick up a sandwich meant for a needy child if they weren't in need. Surely! If it was money then yes, I can see how that could happen.

Where I live there are food bank collection boxes. Some in supermarkets and since the pandemic on certain people's doorsteps. Not yet heard of anyone in the local area raiding them.

More seriously most people are too proud to go to food banks and even claim free school meals.

There was a thread on here this week, and there have been previous threads where posters have had to be convinced to claim them because it helps the school as well.

canigooutyet · 23/10/2020 19:13

Well done on Rashford for doing this.
Fucking disgrace these overpaid, unqualified mp's don't care about this ongoing issue.

They only backed down due to peer pressure back in July. Yet mention stopping the mps subsidised foods and omg how dare we even think about wanting this crap finally stopped.

mongoosebaby · 23/10/2020 19:13

I find it so heartening that in these troubled times, people still care about each other and want to help. A shining beacon in the misery that is covid.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 23/10/2020 20:39

Our local butchers have offered to provide free sausages to any cafe who is going to put together lunches for children. I’m so impressed ordinary people are stepping in when our shit government has just tuned their back.

RJnomore1 · 23/10/2020 20:43

This is amazing.

I’m in scotland and I will often criticise our government but credit where it is due. They’ve put money up to cover this until easter.

I’m very very moved by people in England stepping forward to do this though. 💕
