I LOVE silence, this is hell. I've been referred to ENT but obviously sat reading horror stories on the net. Does sudden tinnitus ever just go?

I had tinnitus suddenly start during a stressful period of my life, it lasted around two months and then it went.

Stress, lack of sleep and aspartame all trigger mine. My Dr mentioned aspartame, I thought it was a bit strange but avoided it anyway and the improvement was unreal.

For some reason, putting earplugs in all the time helps (the putty ones), I can't really explain why but it works for me.
Mine comes and goes, usually for weeks or months at a time. No attack has been as bad as the first though, maybe I just learned better coping mechanisms.

Sorry your suffering but glad you posted, I am now going to have a look into using white noise as others have suggested!
