Moving to Birmingham Advice

Hi, I would be very grateful for any advice or pros on cons of moving to Birmingham to work near the NEC, aged 26, single and I don’t know anyone. Can anyone recommend areas to live? I would be looking to rent initially, happy to live in the city centre. Normally (prior to covid) I enjoy trying new cafes/bars/ pubs/ restaurants, the theatre, Zumba/ exercise classes and I would like the opportunity to make new friends too. I’d be moving from Manchester, any comparisons would be interesting too. Thank you.

Hi there

Birmingham is a great city for young people! Well, the cultural opportunities are a bit trashed right now, but they’ll be back.
If you are working at the NEC then Solihull is the most obvious easy commute, but it’s quite expensive, more of a family suburb vibe.
Moseley, Kings Heath, Harborne are more eclectic areas but with more of a commute for you, and probably a drive.

There are lots of Birmingham accounts on Twitter and Instagram, so maybe follow a few of those to get an idea of life in the city right now.

Good luck, I was born north of Bham but have very fond memories of studying and great nights out in the city centre ( or ‘town’ as you will come to call it. 😀)

I'd avoid Chelmsley Wood, which is very near the NEC but Birmingham International railway station is on the NEC campus so maybe have a look along where the railway line goes?
