....how did you finance it? Looking at remortgaging, but interested in how other people have done it! Also include how much your extension cost!

I think ours cost about 60k, single storey and small garage converted into a small office and downstairs toilet. This included patio being built also and all the kitchen and appliances. Was funded through inheritance.

Pipandmum · 22/10/2020 21:46

It cost about £40k. Included en suite shower room. It's almost an orangery - glass roof and two windows and two sets of french doors, custom made wooden double glazed.
I financed it from sale of another property. I love it - I spend my days there as it is so bright.

Small single storey extension with new kitchen. I think it cost about £20k. Saved up for it

WhereOnEarthDoIStart · 22/10/2020 22:00

Did the loft with savings. Then remortgaged. And did the extension. And then again remortgaged.

JoJoSM2 · 22/10/2020 22:01

We’ve only ever paid for refurbs from savings.

Pikachubaby · 22/10/2020 22:02

twobrews · 22/10/2020 22:07

Bonuses and DH blagging free stuff calling in favours from suppliers

thebeatofthedrum · 22/10/2020 22:13

Savings although I look back on it now and wonder how we managed to do it! (can't remember exact cost but about £40k). We did pay in instalments to be fair.

emsmum79 · 22/10/2020 22:14

£50k equity in our house plus £20k savings. We're now skint but our extension has improved our house and lives immeasurably. Wrap around 1 storey extension - study, shower room, kitchen, utility, family room, and remodelling of existing downstairs.

From savings
Attic conversion,kitchen extension and orangery

ExclamationPerfume · 22/10/2020 22:18

Remortgaged for our kitchen extension. The build was 15k and then we spent 5k on the kitchen itself. We got it at a discount through family.

mintich · 23/10/2020 11:14

For those who saved, how long were you saving for?

BarbaraofSeville · 23/10/2020 11:42

Combination of saving, a low interest personal loan and interest free credit for the kitchen from Ikea, cost was around £50k for a large single storey extension.

Saving took several years to amass around £40k, but this wasn't an intentional plan, we were just dithering over the 'move or extend' dilemma and the savings mostly built up due to our mortgage rate dropping to almost nothing.

In the current climate, if your jobs are secure and you have enough equity you might as remortgage seeing as interest rates are so low.

TobblyBobbly · 23/10/2020 11:43

Ages! About 10 years.

Titsywoo · 23/10/2020 11:46

Borrowed money from here there and everywhere to finance it, did lots of the work ourselves to make it cheaper then as soon as it was done remortgaged and borrowed extra to pay off the debts. The value had gone up so much it didn't make too much difference to our monthly outgoings. For the loft conversion we had a bit of a windfall when the company DH worked for sold and he had shares but we remortgaged again and borrowed the final bit. Even with both the extra borrowing we are still at 70% LTV after owning the house for 7 years as the extensions nearly doubled the value of the house.

Wilma55 · 23/10/2020 11:49

About 60k including kitchen units and white goods. Single storey across back of semi. Borrowed on offset mortgage at very low interest rate. Balance paid off with inheritance.

MillieEpple · 23/10/2020 12:09

Remortgage/savings and a gift from elderley relative

AriettyHomily · 23/10/2020 12:13

We were quoted £70k for a single dog leg extension. We moved house instead.
