Moon cup and tss

user1471462428 · 22/10/2020 20:42

I had tss 14 years ago on the first time of using a tampon. I have been considering using a moon cup as I’m now having to wear adult nappies during my period. Can anyone tell me if there is a risk of TSS with moon cup

Google says it's rare. HTH.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 22/10/2020 20:47

The mooncup website says “Do not use any internal vaginal devices, including the Mooncup, if you have been previously diagnosed with TSS”

MamaMoonbeam · 22/10/2020 20:47

I have left my cup in for 12hrs+ before and no issues. The blood is in the cup rather than held against the skin so I think tss would be very rare

Hello.
I can’t tell you as a medical fact that there is no risk however I can tell you that I have had TTS twice in my life.
I spoke to the practice nurse when I first started using a cup 20 years ago and she couldn’t see why it would be a problem but she had no knowledge of cups.
I’ve used one successfully for 20 years without a problem.

It's really scary, I'm worried about it too when using a cup. However it seemed to mostly be linked to tampons. www.webmd.com/women/guide/understanding-toxic-shock-syndrome-basics#1

@WithTheJonses I know how to use google thanks... I just wondered whether there were any known cases of TSS occurring with them or whether there was any evidence they’re safer than tampons. I nearly died when I had TSS but I am really struggling with the cost of nappies.
@StanfordPines @MamaMoonbeam @2Kidsinatrenchcoat thanks for the info/support

All I can say is that I’ve had TTS twice. Within 2 hours of using a tampon I become violently ill. I’ve never been ill with my cup.

That’s not to say it’s 100% safe as I’m not a medical person and only speak from my personal experience.

I'm sorry to hear that OP. Flowers Looks like mooncup doesn't recommend those who have been ill with TSS to use cups.

StanfordPines · 22/10/2020 21:16

The thing is that no cup manufacturer would ever risk saying that a cup cannot give you TSS. It wouldn’t be worth it, even if the chance is minimal.

MrDarcysMa · 22/10/2020 21:17

The only risk would be if you left if in too long (which you wouldn't be able to tbh if your periods are that heavy)

gigi556 · 22/10/2020 21:37

It's believed to be lower risk because a cup doesn't cause tearing of vaginal walls like a tampon does. Here's a link to lancet study about safety: www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpub/article/PIIS2468-2667(19)30111-2/fulltext

Nappies sound extreme. Have you looked at washable pads and pants? The upfront cost is expensive but they are both really effective and comfortable.

user1471462428 · 22/10/2020 22:05

@gigi556 that article was interesting. I’ve used period pants but bleed through them, hadn’t thought about washable pads. The nappies have now given me thrush so really need to try alternatives. Bloody tired all the time from how anaemic I am. Waiting for referral to different hospital as surgeon who ended finding my Endo had seen me previously and told me my secondary infertility and heavy periods were all in my head and I didn’t have enough sex to conceive. He doesn’t feel able to look after me again as he feels that I won’t be able to trust him. I actually no longer care and just want someone to help!

What about wearing pads with washable pants? Or using inserts with the pants? If I can take a picture later I'll post what I mean.

Whatwouldscullydo · 23/10/2020 06:49

I think the one case linked to a cup was because someone left it in for days.

I do recommend reusable pads though check out luxury moon and earthwise girls

user1471462428 · 23/10/2020 08:35

Agree with Pp’s that I probably wouldn’t be able to wear it for long enough to have problems. I realise there is a massive difference between what manufacturers have to warn of and what has actually happened which is why I was interested in finding out whether there were known cases of TSS with a moon cup. I’ll try washable pads with my period pants first. Just struggling with how much it’s costing me, can’t wait to have my hysterectomy I’ll be millionaire. Thanks for the advice and support everyone
