Is it possible to be sick only ten mins after eating...

...something that disagreed with you/was off??

DD, out today, bought a cake from a bakery, ate it, was very sick ten mins later, felt fine afterwards.

WTF??

Or do you think it's a bug??? She was at home yesterday, not at school.

Definitely possible!

FippertyGibbett · 22/10/2020 15:35

Yes, your body’s natural way of getting rid of something that doesn’t agree with it.

Muddybuddy · 22/10/2020 15:36

Unusual for a cake to make someone sick though surely, unless it was huge! Cakes don’t often contain the kind of thing to bring about food poisoning do they?

Yep. 10 minutes is definitely long enough.

Meruem · 22/10/2020 15:36

I once was on a ferry and many people (thankfully not me) had fish in the onboard cafe. Less than half an hour later my partner (who foolishly had the fish!) and literally hundreds of other passengers were throwing up everywhere! I have never witnessed anything like it. In the toilets every cubicle was full and people had resorted to vomiting in the sinks! The boat was just full of people lying around groaning and dashing to find somewhere to throw up! So yes I firmly believe you can get ill that quickly!

lughnasadh · 22/10/2020 15:37

Maybe it was just sickly sweet.

I once made myself sick with chocolate. I was too old by far, really. Grin

PlatinumBrunette · 22/10/2020 15:40

I used to be very sick almost immediately after eating fried eggs when I was a kid Think my stomach didn't like greasy stuff.
It's ok now!

tenlittlecygnets · 22/10/2020 15:44

OMG, the ferry story is just vile.

It is odd. DD had rocky road (much too sweet for me but not for dd) but yes, what could have been wrong with it?

She's not allergic to any of the ingredients.

Glad you think it's possible though, and not a bug... but she will stay her room for 24 hours just in case.

Mumdiva99 · 22/10/2020 15:47

Most likely the amount of sugar overloaded her body. Rocky Road is really sweet. Unless it was a tiny M&S size mini one from the tub then it would be too too much for her (I say that as a person who never eats only 1 tiny cake at a time....)

tenlittlecygnets · 22/10/2020 15:50

It was the only thing she'd eaten today as well... Hmm.

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 22/10/2020 15:55

That could be it, then - if her tummy was empty and then she had something incredibly sugary. That kind of thing used to make DS1 throw up.

tenlittlecygnets · 22/10/2020 17:45

Shit - it couldn't be Covid, could it? She has no other symptoms. She's 16.

2 cases of Covid diagnosed in her school this week, none in her year. She has been careful.

OP posts:
Muddybuddy · 22/10/2020 18:04

Vomiting isn’t a symptom of covid though

PowerslidePanda · 22/10/2020 18:26

Any chance she could be pregnant? My experience of morning sickness was a lot like this...

tenlittlecygnets · 22/10/2020 19:37

@Muddybuddy - it can be, though not one of the more common ones...

@PowerslidePanda - don't think so. Will ask.

OP posts:
skelesheridan · 22/10/2020 19:38

Definitely. I ate a gone off egg once and was instantly queasy and sick within in a couple of minutes

tenlittlecygnets · 22/10/2020 21:04

@skelesheridan -could you not tell that egg had gone off? They smell rank!

OP posts:
skelesheridan · 22/10/2020 21:33

Honestly it smelt fine. It was a duck egg and I'd never had one before. It tasted strangely fizzy but in my head I wondered if that's what duck eggs tasted like!!

emmag1925 · 22/10/2020 23:29

Does she suffer from reflux at all?

This can cause someone to suddenly be sick.

Sarahplane · 22/10/2020 23:36

Yes its definitely possible, could also just be too sweet as that happens to my dd all the time.

tenlittlecygnets · 22/10/2020 23:38

Huh. She's always been able to eat lots of chocolate without being sick, so odd.

She says she feels fine now - has had plain pasta and toast. Fingers crossed.

She did have bad reflux as a baby, but not now.

@skelesheridan -avoid fizzy eggs...🥴

probably an allergic reaction to the duck egg
FurrySlipperBoots · 22/10/2020 23:44

The only times I've been ill so soon after eating was with quorn, with I guess I'm intolerant to! I'm thinking there was no quorn in the cake though! Has she had that particular one before without ill effect?

Artforartssake · 22/10/2020 23:49

Honestly, I've known so many people being ill after eating duck eggs that I avoid them like the plague. Ducks live on slugs anyway!

Hope your DD is ok op.

skelesheridan · 23/10/2020 00:10

Very interesting about the duck eggs. My friend raves about them so I bought a box. Never again!!
