Are all washer/dryers shit?

I'm finally cracking and buying a tumble dryer but space is a bit tight and I know my washing machine will need replacing soon so wondering about a washer/dryer. Had one years ago and it was a bit rubbish, just wondering if they had got any better?

I think it depends how many people are in your household and how often you need to do a load of washing. We had a washer dryer for similar reasons a few years ago but found that the drying cycle took ages so it was impossible to keep up with the washing. The biggest issue for me was not being able to have a second load of washing in whilst the first was drying.

dingdang · 22/10/2020 09:01

I had a washer dryer for three years and the dryer was terrible. Only took around half a load and took a long time.

IAmcuriousyellow · 22/10/2020 09:02

They’re ok but y9u can’t dry the same amount as y9u can wash so either small loads or remove half of it between wash and dry which isn’t always possible on a straight-through programme.

I have an AEG washer dryer it’s one of the better ones. It actually drys things in a decent time!! Yes you have to not put a full load in but you wouldn’t in a normal dryer.

RishiMcRichface · 22/10/2020 09:08

I think they might be good for a small household who work ft so you could put on a small load in the morning and it washes and dries by the time you get back. Otherwise I would definitely go for the separate machines if you can squeeze them in. My tumble dryer is in the conservatory as we can't fit it in the kitchen.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 22/10/2020 09:11

All the drying fuctions of the washer/dryers ive used just give you warm, damp clothes

GrumpySausage · 22/10/2020 09:11

I think the size of your household will affect how useful it it.

My friend is single and raves about hers. Think it's be OK for a coupme too.

I had one briefly (few months) and with 4 in our household I could never keep on top of washing. Sold it and went back to seperate.

BlueJag · 22/10/2020 09:14

Miele. We have a washer and dryer and I love them. If I were buying again I'll choose Miele again.

PimlicoJo · 22/10/2020 09:16

Mine washes fine but the dryer is rubbish. I would never recommend one if you have the option of a separate dryer.

SaskiaRembrandt · 22/10/2020 09:18

I don't know about all of them, but mine is rubbish. We never use it, and still rely on the old vented one we've had for 180 years.

WanderingMilly · 22/10/2020 09:18

Yes, they're all shit. Hot, damp and creased clothes at the end of a cycle. Ruins pullovers. Can't do a load of washing and be drying another load at the same time. Blocks the pipes more easily with fluff. Can't do 'mixed' loads easily if things need different drying times....

Brendabigbaps · 22/10/2020 09:23

We went on holiday to a place that had one, it was useless. Took hours to dry anything. I was glad to get home to my separates

AriettyHomily · 22/10/2020 09:25

Yes they are.

sarge89 · 22/10/2020 09:29

Love mine. We had to buy one out of necessity (less space in new house plus baby so lots of washing/drying) and I was skeptical. We have this Beko one: www.beko.co.uk/washer-dryer-8kg-5kg-capacity-wdx850130-black-graphite-white

Time2change2 · 22/10/2020 09:30

It depends on how much you want to tumble dry. If you are a big tumble dryer user and put all sorts in there then you will probably be fed up with it.
If like me, you only tumble dry all the underwear, socks, tea towels and towels and sheets you will be fine.
Mine never clogged up with fluff, it didn’t crease stuff, washing and drying at the same time is a luxury my kitchen could not afford unless I got rid of my dishwasher (not happening).
Also, who says ‘pullover’ haven’t heard that since my Nan used to say it 20 years ago! Have we stepped back in time to the 1970’s? Love it though as it takes me back

FraughtwithGin · 22/10/2020 10:30

My mother had a Miele washer/dryer. Apart from the usual thing of not being able to dry a BIG load in one go, it was great. However, it only served 2 people most of the time.
Would you be able to have a stacking system, washing machine underneath, dryer on top? Admittedly you would lose counter space, but it would give you more laundry flexibility.

Alfiemoon1 · 22/10/2020 10:35

The one I had was rubbish at drying have always had separate since i have mine stacked on top of my washer in the utility room but my in-laws had theirs in the garage as no space in the kitchen

TwigTheWonderKid · 22/10/2020 17:33

We'd lose some shelf space if we put the tumble dryer on top of the washer but we do have an old airing cupboard which is full of crap that we could clear out. I only plan to use it to dry towels and bedding. We normally dry it over our banisters but we currently have 4 kittens in the house and I'm scared they will climb it and plunge to their death.

I think the majority of you are suggesting it's a no and at least that way I can get a heat pump dryer which are much more energy efficient so will make me feel less guilty about buying one at all.

I had a zanussi one which lasted for ages I only ever used the tumble dryer as a emergency though as it only took about 1/3 of a wash load .

Carrive · 22/10/2020 22:49

Bad experience with mine and currently waiting for separate dryer to arrive. Cycles are too long, let me down a lot re warm damp clothes and I end up hanging clothes of radiators and airers around the house. Don’t have an outside either. As PP state, I’ve found it hard to keep on top of laundry because of the cycle lengths and feel as though all I do is wait for laundry and the sort it Angry

Gazelda · 22/10/2020 22:50

Mines an indesit . Works fine for us (2 adults and a teen). I only use it as a back up though, I line dry as much as possible and use an airer with a dehumidifier for most of the rest.

vanillandhoney · 23/10/2020 09:15

Ours is a Hoover.

It works but if it's a big load (bedding or blankets) you have to run the dryer cycle twice Hmm
