Help me plan my odd shape lounge! Photos attached!!

We’ve always struggled with the layout of our lounge. We are planning to redecorate and to change the flooring, and we are also thinking about buying new sofas. So it’s effectively a blank canvas. How would you use this space?

On the floor plan, the conservatory is shown as a family room, and this is where our dining table is. So the lounge only needs to be a lounge (bonus points for incorporating a desk)! The most used route is between the kitchen and the family room.

The photos are from Rightmove from the previous owners and our furniture is very different. We don’t really want to block off the hall door as they had done with the corner sofa.

Any inspiration welcome, thanks!

Similar sofa but with the corner bit at the other end? Or corner sofa where tv is?

itbemay1 · 21/10/2020 22:15

Desk where chair is near back doors, lots of light and a nice view to work, TV on wall opposite where it is now with cabinet underneath? I'd get a large corner sofa so no need for chair

Coriandersucks · 21/10/2020 22:18

Definitely swap the tv and sofas round - could get a decent corner sofa then big coffee table in the middle

It’s crying out for a coffee table and rug infront of the sofa. There’s quite a distance between the sofa and wall with the tele but not sure there’s a better arrangement than you already have!

LagneyandCasey · 21/10/2020 22:19

Do you really need two doors into the lounge? I would be tempted to block up the kitchen one to make that wall more useable.

Oldraver · 21/10/2020 22:20

I'd swap over the sofa to the tv side and the tv where the sofa is. You would probly be blocking off a radiator if you keep the corner settee but looks like you are currently blocking a door

WhispersOfWickedness · 21/10/2020 22:22

I'd swap the rooms around tbh and have the family room as a living room and this one as a dining room and study!

pallisers · 21/10/2020 22:27

I'd paint it a more definite colour - I'm a big fan of deep saturated colour. Would lose the feature wall (if that is what you have). I'd put in a properly sized rug and a coffee table. Move the sectional/sofas out from the wall and put a console table behind the sofa with two lamps on it and side tables also with lamps. If I had the money I'd install a gas fireplace under the tv and make that a feature of the room.

I'd also add way more prints/art/framed photos to the walls.

Just found some photos of how we have it now —must have taken them after a good tidy up— 😂

I'd have the right hand half as the dining area as it leads from the kitchen. Then one sofa between the two doors, tv on left hand wall and another sofa opposite tv. Family room can then get a desk in.

Freeekedout · 21/10/2020 22:44

They did upload 🤭

The TV is on the same wall as the owners had it previously. We do have a rug and coffee table now 😁 Good point about making the wall by the kitchen more usable by blocking the door, but we would have a very long way between the kitchen and conservatory - we eat at the very far end of the conservatory! The walk might be worth it though to get a more usable space. Interesting idea about moving the lounge into the conservatory! I’m desperate for a focal point (not the TV!) and would love to get a fireplace in somehow. All great ideas, keep them coming!!

Titchy, do you mean use the back of the sofa as a room divider? We had the sofa across the middle of the room, with the TV on the opposite wall and dining table in the section nearest the kitchen, but it didn’t really work 😖

I'd change everything around

I'd put a big dining table in in the one labelled 'lounge', running along the wall shared between lounge and garage. Then I've put a desk & some shelves in the other side of the lounge by the window.

and I'd put the sofas & TV in the family room.

Option B - a round dining table in the bit of lounge just outside the kitchen. Then a desk integrated into bookshelves on the long wall that the lounge shares with the garage. that would give lots of useful storage space. And again, the sofa & TV can go in the family room.

NoMoreMrNiceGaius · 21/10/2020 22:51

It makes a lot more sense on the plan to have the family room as a living room and the lounge as a dining room to me. But I'm not british so I have no idea what a conservatory is.

MustDust · 21/10/2020 23:01

What's the budget/scale of work you're prepared to do? Only if that's not a supporting wall from the kitchen I'd be tempted to remove it and make a seating area at the end which would then dictate the rest of the layout.
Is the conservatory an actual warm and cosy room for a lounge?

Freeekedout · 21/10/2020 23:06

I wish the family room was a proper room, but it's a conservatory that's too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter... with a leaky roof 🤦‍♀️ I agree that on the plan it looks better suited to bring a lounge!

@MustDust It's taken me a while to convince DH to replace the sofas so construction work might not go down too well (although we do have some money that could find a bigger project). The conservatory has blinds now so it's a bit more cosy but it still gets too hot / cold in extreme weather.

Just giving this a cheeky bump! I'm off work tomorrow so I'm going to draw out some of the suggestions I've had so far onto a floor plan. Any other ideas to throw in?
