Any ‘proper’ jewellers around?

If an item was valued at £600 in 1986, is there any way of estimating its current value?

There are lots of quite similar looking to my untrained eye with prices varying from £300 to £3,000 on a basic google image search, some useful examples here:

Looks to me like it has lots of age - I would guess late Victorian/Edwardian

Diamond looks rose cut - shank looks thick and heavy

So it might sell in a shop for 2k/3k plus but what they would buy it off you for might only be £600 ish.

Thanks I think Victorian or Edwardian could be right as I think he may gave bought it second hand. My grandfather was born in 1915

I can’t make out any hallmarks they’re very worn. Just this

I’ve collected and bought and sold antique jewellery since the early 90’s.

The price of gold has doubled and interest in antique jewellery has really gone up since then.

In general terms, a shop would sell an item at about half the insurance valuation as they are higher (and would reflect difficulty is sourcing a replacement if you lost the item).

Some auctioneers and valuers
provide a different valuation based on sale price.

In general, I would say antique jewellery is worth 2-4 times what it was worth when I started collecting.

If you have weights and sizes on the valuation why not email a photo and a copy to some jewellery auctions who will give you a free estimate?

The valuation just says 18 ct gold gents single stone diamond ring with engraved shoulders. No weights or sizes, or guess at age

I’m not planning on selling, just for insurance purposes, I’ve already left it to someone in my will

You really need more info on the diamond for the valuation. It is impossible to quantify what carat/colour/clarity etc without seeing it in person.
As it stands, if you lost it, they could replace the stone with any old thing as it's not specified in the paperwork.

Age could be anything from mid 1800's really, a lot of traditional victorian gents jewellery was still quite fashionable up to 1920/1930. It's only really with women's jewellery that we see a real change in styles.

Costacoffeeplease · 24/10/2020 20:50

Thank you, that’s interesting about the age, I really have no idea when or where he got it, I always remember him wearing it

The jewellers near here are all fashion jewellery, not serious jewellers, so I’m very limited on what I can do about it

Keep an eye out for a watchmaker. They’ll know where the nearest jewellers workshop is if you can’t find it.

Wherever people buy their wedding rings where you are would be a good jumping off point. If you have a local social media page it might be worth asking on there for recommendations.

I’ve actually just put a post on fb, so will see what happens. I’m disabled and can’t travel far, and it’s about 3 hours to the capital, where I know there are quite a few jewellers, but I’m just not up to a 6 hour round trip
