How do you do a shop if your toddler hates sitting in the trolley?

No one to look after him and no chance of an online shop.
He hates sitting in the trolley and screams when I try put him in. I used to wear him in a baby carrier but at 2 stone now at 21 months he's just to big to be able to do a shop carrying him.

What do I do??

@babdoc those kind of jokes are notoriously passive aggressive though, not really light hearted, like the classic smiley note on a share house fridge or from a visiting mother in law. It's so patronising to say 'Have a look at your own kids legs. You might find they have feet on the ends too", and an exclamation point or a grin face (or a tinkly laugh, which is definitely how it comes across) doesn't take that away.

Anyway op, hope you managed to find something from the suggestions that works!

@TikTakTikTak

Drive the trolley from the other end so she was facing forwards.
That's genius

You spin the trolley around a few times, as fast as you dare, until they go quiet.
The idea of them facing forwards is a good one.
Giving them "helping" activities (like a supermarket I spy with my little eye) can also be useful.
Last resort, you look at them very sternly and say "we are going shopping now, you are sitting in this seat.
Always make sure they are comfortable in the seat and that they can move around (including twisting and turning).

I did it. I had to wrestle him into the trolley and he screamed fir the first half of the shop but then realised I wasn't giving in so stopped screaming. It felt like a win!

Then I had to nip to a different shop for 2 items so let him walk, he proceeded to knock everything off the shelves, push baskets flying and scream his way round. Felt like a shit mum again with everyone watching, tutting and raising their brows.

I shall continue with the trolley screams I think!

Just let them toddle around you while you go about your shop?

I let my 20 month old loose and tell her to stay where I can see her or help me load things in the trolley/basket. Never had any issues. Did (still do) the same with my older DC

I used to clip him into the main part of the trolley with his reins (for safety) then head straight to the bakery and select a massive baguette. He would eat that all the way round so i only went when he was hungry and he only had a baguette at the supermarket, it became a big treat. Obviously just remembered to pay for it at the end.

For big shops, online always!

Anything else (or if I need to keep my 3.5yo contained) a carrier or wrap on my back. As long as the sling is a decent one, and put on well, it should be manageable.

Good work OP! With my DD who is 22 months I do lots of snacks (healthy with a hidden treat if absolutely necessary), putting things in the trolley and lots of chatting. She quite likes waving and chatting to other shoppers and offering them her snacks. If all else fails pushing the trolley fast down a quiet aisle, she finds that hilarious, or pretending to spot her favourite things (ooo is that a lion on the ceiling?) stops her in her tracks!

There is no way she's getting out of that trolley she acts like she's on Supermarket Sweep! Must say I rarely see kids that young toddling around as described in the thread? All my DD's baby friends would definitely be going wild in the aisles too, so much temptation to grab everything...

@Ohalrightthen he’s on my back so legs not a problem. he’s tall for his age (80th percentile height), but slim. with a fitting carrier its not a problem at all

Pixie2015 · 22/10/2020 21:03

I used to do that with ds, confident he never left my side, until I took my eyes off him for 0.5 seconds and he'd disappeared. Then spotted him through the front window making his way back to the car across the car park 😱. Thankfully a couple had noticed him leaving the shop alone and a lady was at the door speaking to security while her dh was following him to make sure he was safe.

He was secured in a trolley after that.
