Soaked by spilled drinks in restaurant

Out for lunch, put a nice top on, haven't been out in ages. Waitress dropped a tray with 3 1l jugs of water, pint of blackcurrant and soda, pint of lime and soda and 3 open cans of coke all down my back. I was completely drenched.

They were very apologetic, gave us money off, told me to bring in the dry cleaning bill, I changed into ds14's jumper, and apart from a damp bum and bra we had a nice lunch.

The manager kept coming over to ask how I was and what they could do to make it better for me. I couldn't think of anything they could do really, what could they have done? He asked 4 or 5 times and he was clearly desperate for me to come up with something they could do.

What could I have said? Thinking about it now I'm home and dry, could they have offered to dry my top for me (assuming they have laundry facilities for towels and tablecloths)? Could I have asked them to get me a dry top from somewhere? There was no obvious shop or anything around. Should one of the staff have offered me their jumper from the staffroom? We had the car but a taxi home if we'd been walking? My jacket had been hanging over the back of my chair so was also soaked. A hairdryer if one of the staff had one in the locker room? I guess they didn't or they would have offered. Use of the staffroom to wash the sticky coke off privately instead of at the public sink in the ladies might have been good. I didn't think of that at the time.

I did say I thought the tray was way too heavy, one of the jugs hit me on the shoulder and it was heavy. They agreed and apologised.

If you've been a waitress what would you have done to fix up a really wet customer? I couldn't think of anything to say. Now we are back home the kids are coming up with more and more ridiculous suggestions.

@emilyfrost

What is wrong with you? The OP has made a lighthearted post, just being a bit jokey with her kids, you read it wrong and now you're just doubling down on tour weirdly offended responses.

Blimey a lot of people on this thread have had a sense of humour bypass!

Sounds like you were very gracious and pleasant about the whole thing OP and not at all entitled.

Although you should really have demanded a luxury limo to take you to the nearest Gucci and get you decked out head to toe in designer clobber!

CallmeFP · 21/10/2020 20:08

The least they could have done is not charged you. A discount isn’t enough.

Fungster · 21/10/2020 20:08

@theemmadilemma

Gave you money off? Personally I'd have expected to eat free, and my dry cleaning bill paid.
My thoughts exactly.
IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 21/10/2020 20:40

I’d have expected nothing other than them cleaning up the mess as much as possible. Jumpers can be washed and it was an accident. I’d have laughed and found something to change into or gone home if nothing with me.

Totally agree. It's threads like this which make MN such hard work at times. Posters come on here to be shitty to others. It's seriously tiresome.

I once swing around too quickly with a tray and tipped a whole latte into a customer’s handbag at the next table. She didn’t notice so I had to tap her on the shoulder and explain and apologise profusely. It was a coffee shop and it wasn’t even her drink. I think I offered them free cakes. I just remember the look of utter confusion on her face when I said “I’m really sorry, I’ve just spilt coffee into your handbag”!

borntohula · 21/10/2020 23:21

That tray sounds way too heavy.

borntohula · 21/10/2020 23:27

In all seriousness, that waitress probably got a right bollocking from her manager. Not many restaurants can afford to be discounting half the bill at the moment, let alone 100% of it.

combatbarbie · 21/10/2020 23:46

I'd have expected the meal for free to be honest!!

VeganCow · 22/10/2020 08:44

I took it in the way you intended, lighthearted. We also come up with ridiculous scenarios, so I know what you mean by having a laugh with that. Seriosly though, I think they should not have charged you for the meal.
