Does this seem normal to you?

Yesterday afteroon I went for a walk, I did about 12,000 steps and was out for about an hour. When I came home I sat down with a cup of tea for about half an hour. Then I got up and did the following:
Prepared the Dinner
While the dinner was cooking I took delivery of and packed away the supermarket shop and then hoovered the hall and stairs.
The I ate dinner, helped wash up, then I prepared and cooked todays dinner and cleaned up the kitchen, sorted the recycling and food bin.
By this point i was so exhausted I could barely stand. I wanted to put a washing on but just couldn't face going up and down stairs to get the dirty washing. I managed to haul myself upstairs where I had a shower and then literally crawled into bed. At this point my husband came back home and I asked him to bring me a cup of tea in bed, which he did.

I should point out that though he was home for dinner and helped me to wash up he then had to go out to help his elderly parents with food shop and chores.

Today I am physically very tired, my body still aches just sitting at my desk and I am going to go for a lie down now. I felt sort of the same on Sunday after we went on a long walk (approx 90mins) that by the time we got home i was exhausted and had to lie down and couldn't do much for the rest of the evening.

I am early 40's and yes I am a bit overweight but my cardiovascular fitness is better than it was a year ago and I feel good while walking but after I feel awful. I recently had a blood test which showed I wasn't anemic (not sure if they checked my ferritin levels though) or low thyroid. I am due on my period soon and I do get migraines which is my only health issue and I have had headaches the past few days.

I just wonder if its normal to be physically exhausted and in pain the day or and the day after moderate activity in your early 40's?

How much exercise do you normally get?

Cait73 · 21/10/2020 10:35

I don't know how much you usually do in a day but I'm on my own with a one year old, I'm 47, it's not even lunch time and if I were to list the things I've done already we'd be here all day! I'm physically and mentally exhausted pretty much all the time but I don't have time to think about it

willowywillow · 21/10/2020 10:47

I would be if I did that much without a break in between I expect. I run 10k everyday and walk 5k so am fit but have a break, cup of tea or glass of water after every activity. The break does not have to be really long to make a difference.

yourtiger · 21/10/2020 10:48

@GreyishDays It depends, yesterday was probably more than what I'd normally do. But I think even a year ago I could clean the house from top to bottom in a day, I'd be tired but not done in.

I did used to go to a gym but stopped as once I had been I basically couldn't do anything else for the rest of the day even though I felt fine while i was working out.

@Cait73 that sounds really tough!

Oh and I'm 48. Maybe it's an age thing? I remember my gran always wanting to stop for a cup of tea when we went shopping. Grin

Sunseed · 21/10/2020 10:50

How much had you eaten earlier in the day?

yourtiger · 21/10/2020 10:50

@willowywillow I was afraid if I didn't keep moving I'd not be able to get back up. I will try having more breaks and more water as perhaps i was dehydrated.

@willowywillow I've been stopping for cups of tea while shopping since i was in my 20's, what hope is there for me????? Grin

@Sunseed For breakfast I had a bowl of porridge with some banana, some tea and for lunch I had a roll with salad and some cheese with tea. I'm actually not sure how much I've been drinking so perhaps I was dehydrated.

I'd definitely make sure you're drinking enough. Also, although it's relatively light exercise, it may require you to eat a bit more to recover. Perhaps come in and have a banana and some nuts and see if that helps to keep your energy levels up as it may be that your blood sugar has dropped from the exercise?

LindaEllen · 21/10/2020 11:21

I'd be absolutely exhausted from doing that - though I am incredibly unfit.

Make sure you're drinking plenty of water, eating healthily and resting well, and I'm sure there's nothing whatsoever to worry about here.

ilovebagpuss · 21/10/2020 11:22

Is this a normal occurrence or just recently? If it’s not all the time I would think you perhaps had a slight virus or something working against you? I am 45 overweight can do a normal working day and an hour and a half hill walking.
I would feel a bit tired but not so much I had to lie down just that feeling of having done a good level of activity. Maybe my legs would feel a bit stiff the next day.
If it continues I would be inclined to see the gp again.

caringcarer · 21/10/2020 11:26

I went through a similar period of tired ESS last autumn I had a blood test and when it came back showed low levels of bit D. Now I take 3 tablets of bit D3 every day and tiredness gone.

Chumleymouse · 21/10/2020 11:51

I think your just unfit , and not used to doing that amount of walking, do it again and see if it has the same affect on you ?

yourtiger · 21/10/2020 11:59

Ok well Im going to start on some Vitamin D supplements and some B Vitamins and drink more water. I'll also try and organise my routine so that I'm not doing all that in the one day or try and get housework done before I go out walking.
