Andy Burnham vs boris drama?

I really like him, am a manchester ex pat and it has a massive chunk of my heart.
I'm watching the press conference and trying to make sense of boris rambling on - have the government dropped their offer from 60 mill to 22? I believe burnham was asking for 65.
Can anyone clarify?

When I lived there it was in a particularly poor area, and I cannot fathom those people having to operate on even less money.
@cathyandclare why is JVT embarrassing?
Not unusual to shorten in that way.
@ChaosContinues - not guilty! I like JVT and the abbreviation.

It’s like Trump not wanting to help California with the fires because California didn’t vote for him.

I have lived in Bedfordshire my entire life, and we've been lucky that so far we've been pretty unaffected by Covid cases and numbers are very low in my area. So watching the news and seeing all this Boris/Burnham drama going on, and knowing what effect this is going to have on those people in tier 3 is surreal and worrying. Andy Burnham has never really been on my radar before, just someone in the background, but I've found him impressive in the way he's spoken up for the people of Manchester. He's really fought their corner, and it may not go his way but, as an outsider looking in, he's fought hard for what he believes and comes across as very genuine, which is more than I can say for Boris and his cronies. Give me Andy over Boris any day of the week.

For someone who wants to keep the North, to keep the red wall votes that he won, he is definitely going the wrong way about it.

bellinisurge · 20/10/2020 19:15

I live in Greater Manchester. Never a Burnham fan. But he's right. As someone who lived through Thatcherism here in the Northwest, this feels like that. Contempt. Disregard. Victim blaming.
Only this is being televised.
I shudder to think of the consequences.

Surely the only answer to this is to bring back to furloughing for those who need it. Otherwise this situation is going to be replicated time and time again.
I know as a country we can’t afford it but the question is can we afford not to.

anon444877 · 20/10/2020 19:34

Yes furlough ending made sense only when people were able to work, if you aren't working because of covid restrictions then clearly people need additional help. How does BJ think tier 3 works otherwise?

@FatCatThinCat

I wonder if buyer's regret is setting in yet amongst the northerners who voted for Johnson despite his obvious contempt for them.
The Manchester Young Conservatives have disavowed Johnson.

I rather think he’s going exactly the right way about it.

I just really hope all those first time tory voters in England don't fucking do it again.
