What food(s) makes you gain weight especially those who struggle to put on weight?

I’ve been losing huge amounts of weight in the last year or so, taking me from normal weight to underweight. I’ve not done anything differently in terms of diet or exercise and medical tests have all come back normal.

What foods help you personally gain weight (tried and tested please). All answers welcome but especially useful from those who naturally struggle with putting on weight. Thank you

Peanut butter is well known for helping with weight gain as it's easy to eat a lot of and very tasty. Other nut butters too. Avocado too. And, chocolate spread like Nutella, and lots and lots of milk, you could even make a milkshake (with bananas, nut butter, oats and maybe even Nutella) to get a lot of calories, but this might fill you up too much so you don't end up eating something else later on, if that makes sense. Also, putting extra oil/butter in things helps pack in calories. Smile

Oh! And cheese, lots and lots of cheese in basically everything savoury. Grated on top, melted inside, anything!

I put on weight eating dark chocolate whenever I walk past the fridge, too much milk which I adore, white bread with butter, full fat yoghurt (no I don't eat less and get filled up, I eat the same amount as when it's fat free ergo more caloriesHmm)

Carbs will make you gain weight if you eat them with fat - doughnuts, croissants, Big Mac. It's not healthy though.

Thanks everyone so far

Cheese. On it’s own, as a snack.

Carbs

I read that when actors need to gain weight for a part they scarf down cheese and biscuits before bed.

M&S cheese scones with lashings of butter and some cheddar on the side. Ask me how I know...

OP, ask to be referred to a dietician. Years ago my mum had a heart attack and radically changed her diet afterwards, but then couldn't maintain her weight and was losing at least a pound a week. The dietician worked with her on a plan to add some weight and then maintain - this was on the NHS although I don't know if that's still a service they offer. One of the things they had her do was add a couple of carby snacks, one in the morning and one in the evening. Morning was some kind of pastry and evening some biscuits I think, or something similar.

Pasta for lunch with double cream in sauce and cheese.
Add butter/olive oil to veg/salad/mash.
If making noodles/stir fries add couple spoons peanut butter.
Full fat yoghurt or choc mousse as an easy to eat pudding.
Switch milk to full fat- add dash cream or milk powder to up calories.
Drink a milkshake.

Chocolate, crisps, nuts and bread.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/10/2020 05:37

Peanut butter.

Whole milk - in between meals have protein shakes or lattes with whole milk.

"Bulkier" fruit like bananas and avocado.

Of course chocolate, cakes will help you gain weight but obviously it's not great to have lots of those.

Honestly, I'd be insisting on more medical tests, if you're sure you're already eating normally. (Sorry if that's not helpful ...)

But otherwise - peanut butter, straight from the jar. Ice cream. Pastry. Take up baking and don't share the results.

I used to struggle to maintain my weight which was low despite eating and drinking plenty (actually a lot) etc.
For me -
Butter, cheese, cheesy pastry items, avocado, bananas, fatty nuts, solid regular hearty breakfasts. Not much of a sweet tooth but i agree with ice cream !
Good luck op.
