Mirena coil to treat painful periods

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 20/10/2020 11:43

Has anyone done this? Did it help?

My periods are really painful to the point I want to rip my womb out every month Blush. They aren't heavy...just painful.

I have heard the mirena coil can help but I haven't spoke to my GP yet and I am also wary about fitting it. Does it really hurt? I find smear tests painful so imagine a coil fitting will be agonising for me.

The fitting is quite sore but nothing unbearable. take some painkillers first if you don't have an anethetic. You will have a bit of cramping for a few days after. I had spotting on and off for a few months - nothing heavy, nothing even worth wearing a towel for.

And after that....five years with maybe a small bleed once every six months maybe lasting like 12 hours. it has been amazing. i really didn't want to remove mine but TTC now so had to

I have one for the same reasons. Pain and also horrendous mood swings. I put it off for a long time as I wasn't convinced it was for me.

As it happens my smear was due at the same time, so I did both. Smear followed by mirena insertion. The smear honestly felt worse. It is painful but very quick. Take some painkillers before you go.

The only thing I don' like about it is I put on over a stone and have really struggles to lose it.

I do occasionally get stomach cramps, only about every 3-5 months, but they aren't bad ones. Not bad enough for painkillers.

A small bleed every six months actually sounds like heaven to me right now.

I might give my GP a ring to ask about it but not sure if they are still fitting them at the moment.

I react badly to hormone based contraception, so had a copper coil for years, then was persuaded to switch to Mirena after my old one ran out. My periods are now 3 days of very light flow as opposed to 8 days of flooding everything I wore and horrendous cramps.
Only down side is I have absolutely no sex drive anymore, which could be the Mirena or could be peri menopause.
It is quite sore getting fitted, but only takes a couple of minutes, it was worth it to me just for the monthly absence of bloating, cramping and very heavy periods.

I love my Mirena. The fitting wasn’t fun at all, but the worst is over in minutes. The cramps afterwards were sore for a day, and then a bit nippy for around a week after. Nothing so bad ibuprofen didn’t sort out.

I’ve had mine in since the end of July, and my periods last for around 3 days and I barely need a pantyliner they’re so light.

I used to flood, bleed through a super tampon in 2 hrs and have the most horrific cramps. It’s been life changing tbh.

Holothane · 20/10/2020 12:36

I’ve had 10 months of hell since mine fitted fibroid in womb hope it’s big enough to get hysterectomy. I’ve had pain most days since fitting, in January under ga,

LemonBreeland · 20/10/2020 15:37

Also meant to add that I had mine fitted at the sexual health clinic, they do it all the time so much better at it.

Asterion · 20/10/2020 15:39

I'm on my second Mirena now, I haven't had a period for ten years Smile

Take the painkillers about half an hour before you have it fitted. I had no pain at all.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 20/10/2020 15:41

I'm on my third. Last one fitted in Aug and no period at all since. They were a week long and v heavy and painful on the pill years ago.
PMT is much improved too.

Def worth a try. Insertion hurt but no problems since (on any of them)

RatherBeRiding · 20/10/2020 15:42

Had one fitted for exceptionally painful and pretty heavy periods. Worked like the proverbial charm!! Periods were immediately pain free and drastically lighter, gradually petering out all together.

Only regret was not getting one years earlier.

Fitting wasn't comfortable but really not all that bad and I had absolutely no problems or side effects.

Xiaoxiong · 20/10/2020 15:50

I actually had mine replaced this morning! I forgot to take a painkiller beforehand but the nurse put an anaesthetic gel up there and while it wasn't anything I'd do for fun it was no worse than a smear. A bit crampy and spotty this afternoon but nothing at all like a period. I've had 5 years period and cramp free, not to mention not having to remember contraception - looking forward to another 5 years Smile

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 20/10/2020 15:56

Do I just ring up and say I would like one fitted? Sorry I haven't used contraception in a while Blush.

I had mine replaced last week (it's my third, and probably last as I should have sailed through menopause in 7 years, which is how ling they said I could keep this one in for - previous ones have been 5 years).

I didn't have heavy or painful periods previously, I have it purely for easy contraception. No side effects whatsoever.

Insertion is definitely the worst bit, ask for the local anesthetic at the cervix, it means you don't feel the clamp, so then the only painful bit are craps after insertion, and they're very manageable. I seem to also get a weird reaction, where I'm very tearful the day of insertion, and pretty much take to my bed with a big bar of chocolate, but then usually emotionally fine after that. I think it may be something to do with hormones released when the cervix is touched or something?!? Some people can feel a bit woozy after insertion too, so they may ask you to stay lying down for a few minutes before you get up to leave.

Absolutely recommend it!

EmmaStone · 20/10/2020 16:03

And yes, just call your GP. They will have a coil fitting clinic usually, but anecdotally, there's been quite the backlog (on the basis of reports from 2 GP friends and my own surgery). I actually was referred to a local sexual health clinic to have mine done as they couldn't fit me in at my GPs due to backlog (and mine had expired, so was a bit urgent!).

lesbihonest · 20/10/2020 16:04

If they work they’re brilliant .

Best friend has one and she loves it . Fitted by GP . No problems . Stopped her from needing a hysterectomy .

I had mine under anaesthetic, no end of problems and pain - I woke up in agony, was stuck with it for two years as GP kept saying it would settle Hmm, would never have again .

HoneysuckIejasmine · 20/10/2020 16:05

I had one fitted a year or so ago - I have endometriosis and was at the end of my tether. I also take the mini pill - my consultant wanted to stop them all together and it's absolute bliss. He calls it "a coil and a half" because the mirena only comes in one dose and for some people it's not quite enough on its own.

It's life changing.

TeddyIsaHe · 20/10/2020 16:07

Look and see if you have a local women’s health or GUM clinic. They are usually better than the GP.
Xiaoxiong · 20/10/2020 16:30

I think I had to have an appointment with the GP first for a contraception review, where we discussed various options though I was pretty sure I wanted a mirena. (I assume these days this would be easily done over the phone). Then the GP referred me to the nurse who does all the fittings.
