how much money do you have to spend on yourself each month?

I never seem to have enough to cover my basic upkeep never mind treating myself. I earn a good income but admittedly my rent eats up a lot of it as i live in an expensive part of an expensive city. I have a friend my age who is self employed and she always seems to have loads of money to spend on herself just this month she bought herself a new ipad air, apple pencil and an expensive beauty advent calender. When ever we meet up she will often buy herself books, candles, skincare items when we are out and about. She is very debt adverse so its not all on credit. Her husband is a decent earner but I'd say she could easily speand up to £1000 a month on herself and not bat an eye while I am lucky is I can manage £50!

How much do you have to spend on yourself and what do you buy?

We have about £500 per month after bills, food etc.. however I never spend it all on myself, probably spend less than £100 per month.

I spend my disposable income on things like days out with the kids, treats like coffee with a friend or a takeaway, occasional bits of clothing and shoes.

user1485461206 · 19/10/2020 16:22

I spend quite a few hundreds a month on myself, clothes, makeup, having my hair done, nails, lashes, brows, but if we needed something for the house or the kids needed/wanted something that would come above me spending on myself.
My husband does about the same spending wise as me also.

It depends I don’t have a set amount as such. So far this month.

Gym £15 Pw
New coat £65
Coffee & treats £20 Pw
New boots £45
Makeup £90 needed a few bits to top up
Nails £35 pm
Hair £80pm

So overall not much however but I am not a spender at all. I never just go out shopping & I never use credit and have worked myself up the ladder over the years. Plus my mortgage etc are quite low compared to others.

moonlight1705 · 19/10/2020 16:27

We budget the majority of things from our joint account including hobbies which takes care of most of my spending. All things house and child related come out of that.

We each have £150 per month for purely ourselves i.e. new book, new clothes or presents for friends/family. It does mean if I have a colour & haircut then I do it in months when I am not buying Christmas presents etc.

beansonbread · 19/10/2020 16:27

My husband and I take £50 each out of our monthly incomes for ourselves. This is used for haircuts, clothes, outings with friends when we go out on our own etc. If we're going for a meal together, weddings, days out, cinema trips etc all come out the joint account.

It's not much but it makes us appreciate anything we do buy so much more because we have to think carefully about how we spend our money. I wanted to get my haircut this month as an end of furlough treat but I also need a new coat so that is taking priority and the hair cut is on hold.

We could take more out for ourselves each month but we'd rather put it away into savings or spend it on our son.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/10/2020 16:28

I don't spend a lot on myself (I cut my own hair, don't get nails or brows done etc and I don't wear much makeup). Clothes I tend to go twice a year and add items to my wardrobe.

We have spare money, but I don't spend it on me unless I really want or need. I'm happy to wait til Christmas or birthday if I spot (say) a handbag I like. However if I need (e.g. suitcase breaks before a trip) then I just get it.

I suppose my phone contract? 20quid month.

Mydogatemypurse · 19/10/2020 16:29

I dont by myself something every month unless you count shampoo or deodorant that I might need. But I will sometimes buy an item of clothing that wouldnt ever cost more than £50, but might cost £10??. Maybe every 3 months. I also sometimes get myself candles at aldi and I will replace make up if needed. Normally max spend is £30 on one item (but I'm a big nyx fan so usually much cheaper) and prob no more than 3 times a year.

AnaViaSalamanca · 19/10/2020 16:31

I am not going to put numbers but recurring are

PT
yoga (or subscription to an app now)
hair
replace skincare items when they run out
climbing gym
club memberships
books

I don't have a shopping habit and rarely (maybe twice a year) buy clothes and makeup. Shoes almost never unless to replace old ones or running shoes

Mydogatemypurse · 19/10/2020 16:31

I cut and colour my own hair and big purchases like bags and coats I get off e bay. But these last me years. X

ParkheadParadise · 19/10/2020 16:33

I'm very lucky to have a large disposable income every month.
I get my hair done every week and my nails every 3weeks. I also add to my makeup collection if I see something I like. If I see something for the house or dd I like I will buy it.
Today I treated my sister to a bottle of perfume.
I'm a SAHM. When I had dd1 I was a skint single parent so hardly ever treated myself.

Megan2018 · 19/10/2020 16:35

£0 because I have a horse that costs £500ish, if I didn’t have my beautiful money pit I’d have the £500 and nice nails Grin
But I’d be bored silly.

jakor · 19/10/2020 16:40

I don't really have a set amount & it's not consistent. Last month I probably spent £100. This month already £300 & I will get my hair done so it will be quite high.

SqidgeBum · 19/10/2020 16:52

We live very comfortably and have about 1800 left over each month after bills. However, I rarely ever buy myself anything. I do the odd crochet night (£10). Maybe a trip to primark but usually for something I need like knickers or winter clothes (£30). I get my nails done maybe 3 times a year (£25). I have bought makeup once this year. I just dont buy anything I dont need. I was very poor for a very long time and I just cant get into the habit of buying myself anything.

Bit depressing now that I write it down actually.

mindutopia · 19/10/2020 17:50

How long is a piece of string really. I would say after joint expenses, I probably have about £1100 left. Maybe £100 of that will go for petrol and the occasional other irregular expense (like car insurance, prescription, etc). I would say on average maybe £1000. My take home pay is about £2400 a month. Obviously the difference is I have someone to share living expenses with as Dh pays a little bit more than half (earns slightly more than I do), and we earn quite well. That said, I don’t spend lots on things (can’t remember when I last bought any new clothes, last hair appointment was December, etc). Most of it goes to savings really or the occasional treat or a book or something.

UnitedRoad · 19/10/2020 18:52

I have £15 a week, but I have to buy presents out of that so most weeks I limit it. It doesn’t sound much, but is only for bits I need. Basic toiletries go in with the main shop, I cut my own hair, don’t wear make up and work from home so don’t need new clothes very often

A four pack of Wispa Gold, and a 99p kindle book makes me very happy!

JuiceyBetty · 19/10/2020 19:41

@AcornPaw

I get things for my birthday or Christmas, but other than that I only treat myself if it's an item that can't wait until then (i.e: my favourite dress got horribly stained, they don't sell it new anymore, and one came up in my size on ebay).

That said, I have a lot of 'treats' in my life that cost me nothing (taking my dog for walks in the beautifully kept local park, quality time with DH, being able to regularly see friends who live close by) so I don't really feel like I need to buy anything in order to feel good

This is a lovely way to look at it. I agree, my treats are plentiful and free.
BashfulClam · 19/10/2020 20:18

After I’ve paid all bills including food I have £500 left a month. I save £300 and the rest is pocket money.

Millie2013 · 19/10/2020 20:27

We have a fair bit left over, but I’m very low maintenance, I dye my own hair, get a cheap cut, rarely buy clothes, wear the same coat for years on end and have OH’s hand me down phones. It’s not martyrdom, I’m just not materialistic in the least. If I do spend money, it’s on craft stuff

pastaparadise · 19/10/2020 20:35

Me and dp both have £400 per month after all food, bills etc. That's for haircuts, clothes, and drinks/ food when we're on our own, nights away (not family holidays), presents except to dc etc. He spends all his but i squirrel quite a lot away.

Newbeginningsnow · 19/10/2020 20:42

I feel quite guilty because I spend an awful lot more on myself than my DH does on himself.

£15 PT weekly (which I might stop soon but really should continue)
£125 Hair every 8-10 weeks
£18 Nails every 3-4 weeks (this is a fairly new thing and I can’t decide if I want the expense but I do love having them done)
£? High end make up and skincare as and when required

One thing I don’t buy enough of is clothes and shoes. I end up wearing the same old rags for months on end then realise I need a whole new wardrobe for £££.

I actually asked DH earlier if he minded me spending £27 per month on my nails as I felt quite guilty about it and he made a joke about it. Doesn’t mind at all but I feel bad! Even though it makes me feel good ...

blue25 · 19/10/2020 20:46

I have around 1.5k disposable, but I actually choose to save most of it for future holidays and early retirement, so I don’t spend much of it.

doadeer · 19/10/2020 20:49

Lots I'm like your friend I think.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 19/10/2020 20:49

Nothing this month.
I have the money but there's nothing I need.
