Will the Doctor think we are wasting their time if I take DS13 to see them because of Acne? Its starting to affect his self confidence and is quite significant in severity especially on the back of his neck and forehead. We have tried Acnecide and Salycic acid but getting nowhere.

Take them and they can provide medication for it. Acne will ruin their self image and scar their skin. Get it sorted.

Karwomannghia · 18/10/2020 21:46

Yes I took dd at 13 and they prescribed cream which has worked well when used consistently with cleansing. She also tried tablets but in the end got on the with cream better. Wish I’d taken her sooner.

Of course you can take them for acne.

People present to A+E with foreign objects inserted into their rectums so a child with acne will be no bother.

Yes, and hope for a referral to a dermatologist.
But read plenty and ensure you’re totally clued up about any potentially dangerous side effects of drugs he may be offered.

DonaldTrumpsChopper · 18/10/2020 21:49

Definitely take them, the GP will take it seriously.

DS is now on a second type of low dose antibiotics, and two creams. He's had regular appointments with the GP and a referral to a dermatologist. They like to catch it before there is too much scarring.

Redcrayons · 18/10/2020 21:51

I took DS when he was similar age.

Prescribed Duac which cleared it up.

LadyWithLapdog · 18/10/2020 21:52

Of course you can. Or make a telephone appointment and have some photos ready to send through, if needed. Or a video consultation. Mine needed antibiotics as it was on their backs and large areas, difficult to use a cream over such a large area. My youngest is still managing with lotions and potions we buy for the time being as it’s only a bit on her face.

embolass · 18/10/2020 21:52

Absolutely! though they may prefer a tele visual appt if they offer that kind of service. I suffered for years but glad I persisted. Went down the antibiotic route/pill, lotions and potions then eventually got Roaccutane. A wonder drug if ever there was one. Gave me back confidence and essentially my twenty’s with no skin stress, It can really be soul destroying for mental health. Go for it and good luck !

PutBabyInTheCorner · 18/10/2020 21:59

Why would a doctor think you're wasting time?
I feel sorry for your son if it's severe and impacting on his confidence. I hope you aren't suggesting it's something he should just put up with.
I had dreadful acne from the age of 13 and even now at 40. My parents were never really sympathetic and I wish I'd had more support in dealing with it.
I agree with other comments though and read up on any drugs they might prescribe. I was given roaccutane which can have extremely nasty side affects.

charmsofasimplelife · 18/10/2020 22:06

Of course!

I was taken when I was 13. I still have scarring in my cheeks. I wish my mum took me sooner.

DramaAlpaca · 18/10/2020 22:10

It's a very good idea to take him. I took DS along when he was about 14. The GP took it seriously and prescribed benzoyl peroxide for topical use and a long course of antibiotics. Within six months his skin was clear and the acne never came back.

Bunnybigears · 18/10/2020 22:10

I'm not suggesting he should just put up with it, we have tried allsorts. I just didn't want to take him to the doctors for them just to say he's 13 of course he has spots. I will call tomorrow, I imagine they will want some photos etc as most of their appointments are phone appointments at the moment.

Please do take your child to the doctors sooner rather than later. My 14 year old dd was prescribed DUAC gel which has worked well. My ds2 had terrible acne and ended up on roaccutane and has scarring.

IndieTara · 18/10/2020 22:13

I'm considering doing this for DD11. She has bad acne anc blackheads on her face and acne all over her back.

user127819 · 18/10/2020 22:16

There are lots of things they can prescribe for acne nowadays, so don't let it affect his self confidence if it doesn't have to. Duac works great for many people. You won't be wasting their time.

MrsPnut · 18/10/2020 22:20

We took DD2 when she was 12, she was prescribed erythromycin liquid which it turns out she is allergic to, so she is now on lymecycline tablets which along with nip and fab glycolic plus wipes and avene moisturiser have made a huge difference to her skin.

MrsPnut · 18/10/2020 22:22

These are the face pads www.nipandfab.com/skincare/glycolic-fix-x-treme-pads and the moisturiser www.avene.co.uk/face/specific-care/cleanance-oily-and-blemish-prone-skin/cleanance-comedomed there are deals out there on both.
