Think I'm getting to the point where I need reading glasses. But am also really short sighted.

Any others in this boat? How do you do make up for example?!

You can magnifying mirrors or make up glasses - so you flip one lens down and do your make up and then do the same with the other side.

Or....... (my preferred route) no make up.

Yes!

Contacts with reading glasses, varifocal lenses (yes, they exist) or varifocal glasses.

If you can't do your eye makeup you can get glasses with flip down lenses, so you look with one eye to make up the other.

Yes, I think it's called age ;)

I just generally stumble around in a near blind state most of the time, only being able to see stuff in the middle ground

Sorry for everyday life varifocals!!

StillMedusa · 18/10/2020 21:31

I'm very shortsighted. I wear contacts for that but have cheap reading glasses permanently on my head for anything close up ( cheap ones because I lose them constantly)
When not at work I wear varifocals and they are brilliant... I don't wear them to work as they are expensive and I work with challenging behaviour and get hit a lot!
I tried varifocal contacts but there is a compromise in distance vision at my prescription so I never felt they were quite the job.

AbsentmindedWoman · 18/10/2020 21:37

Those of you who wear varifocals, did it take a while to get used to them?

Have never heard of the glasses where you can flip one lens down!

I used to have my ordinary prescription glasses and a pair of prescription reading glasses. Then I decided to change to one pair of varifocals and they are brilliant. Now I have two pairs of varifocals, my everyday ones and my occupational ones for work.

These days my eyes are too dry for contacts so I don't bother much When I do wear them I need reading glasses as well, so they are a bit of a pain.

As for makeup, I don't wear it much but I can see to put it on if I get very, very close to the mirror.

DramaAlpaca · 18/10/2020 21:39

@AbsentmindedWoman I was lucky with varifocals, I found them fine right from the minute I put them on. DH took a couple of weeks to be comfortable with his.

Bargebill19 · 18/10/2020 21:43

Varifocals - fine from the first time I used them. For long periods of reading (ok watching amazon prime in my phone) I do wear prescription readers. ..... then promptly fall over a cat whilst getting up for a brew, as I’ve forgotten to swap them back.

EBearhug · 18/10/2020 21:43

Loads of people are like this, which is why bifocals and varifocals exist.

Bargebill19 · 18/10/2020 21:44

Make up glasses - 1 of many on amazon

It's called Presbyopia which is the gradual loss of your eyes' ability to focus on nearby objects. It's a natural, often annoying part of aging. It usually becomes noticeable in your early to mid-40s and continues to worsen until around age 65.**
