If you know schools in Cheltenham and Gloucester

And you were choosing a school for two boys - one more academic, likes things like debating, writing, music etc, and one still academically fine but more sporty, good all rounder, which private school would you send them to?
Looking at private because we are thinking of coming back from Australia and so need some flexibility with tutoring in things they might have missed, and also on start dates.
Thank you in advance!

Thanks @Parsley1234 i don’t think we would want them to board, maybe occasionally if they wanted to later but not straight away. I will message you though as I want to know about the feel of the school too.
I’ve had such great help from this thread, thank you so much. I’ve got lots to research although it’s hard as basically I want to know; which parents will be friendly, not snooty, nice, normal kids etc. The school they are at now in Sydney is a total mix of nationalities and backgrounds - obviously mainly lawyers, Drs, accountants with a sprinkling of Chinese super rich but also plenty of kids whose grandparents are paying fees etc, and it has a very “normal” and down to earth feel whereas the school down the road is “known” for being more snooty, mums are fully made up for drop off etc (whereas I’m in gym kit, no make up every day) and it’s so hard to gather that knowledge without being able to visit.

@Ozgirl75 please do pm me 🙏❤️🙏

I knew them about 30 years ago. I'd do your research thoroughly, as some of the grammar schools especially a couple in Gloucester had lower than the normally accepted standards of entry.

Although there is a lot of flooding around Tewkesbury, it is more an inconvenience than anything, and the vast majority of properties are fine - we can have terrible flooding in south Worcs and everyone just goes onto flood timetables and diversions. From there you are looking towards Malvern or Worcester for private schools.
Its a lovely area, and you get more for your money away from Cheltenham/Gloucester, though of course it depends on where you need to get to for work

I agree with the PP, very few houses flood in Tewkesbury and it’s only once every two or three years that it becomes a pain to drive around or access the town centre.
However, I think you would still choose schools in Cheltenham over Malvern/Worcester.
I would choose Cheltenham over Gloucester to live, but I think its important to consider what kind of place you want to live. Tewkesbury is a small market town with only a few restaurants etc, whereas Cheltenham has more choice. Or there are loads of lovely villages with easy access to Cheltenham. Good luck!

For both your sons needs I would say Kings. Fantastic school for both academic and sporting students.

Yes I like the whole area around there. I was at university in Bristol so I have a real fondness for the West Country/cotswolds in general, so we would look all around that area. Our business is in Staffordshire but we only go to it about once every couple of weeks (and not at all at the moment as we are trapped in Sydney!) but we liked the look of Cheltenham area as it’s a couple of hours to both sets of parents, about an hour and a half to our factory, good links to airports and motorways but still able to find nice rural properties. My husband loves Wales too for hiking and kayaking and things (we do a lot of both here in Sydney, he’s rose coloured tinted the rain away I think) so it’s a good location for us.

I love Bath though and had a brilliant time in Bristol (albeit 20 years ago!)

Reading this with interest as we are relocating home next year in similar circumstances and are looking at either Worcester or Cheltenham

Catcheronthesly · 19/10/2020 08:13

Worcester and Cheltenham are both nice and similarly sized. What kind of things are you looking for? (I’ve lived in both!)
