Do you think child benefit should be capped like other benefits ?

Just had a (v wealthy) family member exclaim that they are v surprised I get child benefit for my new baby as they ‘thought it was capped at 2 children’ .They aren’t really sure though as earn approx 80k so don’t receive it themselves 😣🙄
Feeling very judged and then hear from someone else that said family meme we above believes giving us an extra £13a Week is encouraging people to have more children when they can’t afford it and encourages being a spendthrift .....

Feeling pretty shitty tbh about it is this what people really think

@OnlyFoolsnMothers yes, you can either chose to pay it there and then or you can get a bill in the post. But...if you do turn up unannounced and you are admitted (because you are obviously in need of treatment then you are not charged either)....however you are charged if you have no medical card (for those on low income) or no health insurance. But even if you have neither of those your charges are capped at approx €650 a year

So for example I had a cousin who has no health insurance and is not eligible for a medical card. Her dd was ill so went to a&e...she was admitted for 4 nights i think. The "care" is free but the hospital stay was charged at about €85 per night. So her bill was €340.

Actually it has changed to €800 per year

All the info is in that link

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

I recently had to pay a % of mine back; which I was expecting so no issues there- but didn’t appreciate the hmrc advisor on the phone asking if I’d like to opt out altogether Hmm...would hmrc like to collect less tax from me?! Also you need a CB letter to apply to schools - makes no sense to me. Why not just put children on the council tax bill then?!
Yes but if you go on to earn over the threshold where you won’t keep any of it, it’s simpler not to receive the money as then you don’t need to repay it. I think they were trying to be helpful

it’s simpler not to receive the money as then you don’t need to repay it what rubbish sorry, it’s not difficult to pay it back, why shouldn’t I receive what I’m entitled too? Also the amount taking me over the threshold is a bonus, ie no guaranteed. Also about to take a mat leave that will keep me significantly under the limit.

We did opt out of payment as dh was always over the £60k top limit. I still did the claim though as it protected my NI credits and the kids get their NI number automatically at age 16.
