Are macbooks worth the cost?

Just that really. Need a laptop that will last as long as possible without becoming really outdated. Online reviews of the 2020 model are good but just wondering about personal experience of them.
Love the looks and apple stuff generally but just wondering if will last. We can afford it but can't afford to replace it in 2 years.

Yes. Definitely. I have a MacBook Pro for work. And a MacBook Air at home. I've had the Air two years and I love it. It's easy to use and it's so light. My kids have Airs too and they've been great for GCSEs and A levels.
I have a butterfly keyboard and had problems with that but I booked it into the Apple store and they fixed it within a week for me. I love my MacBooks and would never choose anything else.

MollynAlly · 17/10/2020 13:39

Thanks for asking! I wonder exactly the same thing, is it really worth the price? I desperately need a laptop- can't decide

amusedbush · 17/10/2020 13:40

Yes. Last year I bought a reconditioned 2017 MacBook Pro for £750 from Music Magpie and it was immaculate, not a mark on it.

I’ve had Windows laptops since the early 2000s and without fail, they become more and more laggy until they grind to a halt after 3 years. My MacBook has never slowed down and I love that it ‘talks’ to my phone so my accounts sync up.

DH just bought a new one but his last one was 13 years old and didn’t owe him a thing.

I have a 7 year old Mac Book pro which is still working away brilliantly. My brother just replied his MacBook Air after 11 years, and then only because he managed to drop it in the bath!!! Love Mac tech ... nothing like it. (IMO ...)

StatementKnickers · 17/10/2020 13:41

Massively overrated, not worth the price IMO. You're paying for the name. They don't even have touchscreens! You can get a non-apple laptop with the same specs as a Macbook (or better) for half the price. Look at Which for reviews.

ladybee28 · 17/10/2020 13:43

I've had my Macbook Air since 2013 and it's still going strong.

Freaks me out a bit actually, I'm worried it SHOULD have died by now, but it's good as new. Would definitely buy one again (and may, soon).

What's the benefit of a touchscreen on a laptop?

I can get it on a tablet, but a laptop I've never really understood the point.

Rebus1 · 17/10/2020 13:45

Thanks for all the feedback seems popular among most people. Glad to hear it lasts!

I've got one and it's overpriced for what it is. My work laptop does everything the MacBook does.

TheReturnOfGavlar · 17/10/2020 13:47

Yes if you want something that works well for a decade.

Varjakpaw · 17/10/2020 13:47

All five of us have one. 2 x dc at uni, one at sixth form, DH WFH consultant and me. We can all run windows software on them too for various things we need for work/study and they have been brilliant. Apple support is fab on the odd occasion something needs fixed. I love that we can easily pop them in our bags for work/school without breaking our backs.

billybagpuss · 17/10/2020 13:49

In our house the average lifespan of a regular laptop has been about 3 years the MacBook is about 10 years now and still going strong.

Who wants a touch screen laptop?? I spend half my life trying to clean rogue fingerprints off my screen as it is!
Rockbird · 17/10/2020 13:51

Yes. Just replaced my 2009 MacBook which is still going strong, just slower. DH used windows laptops for work. He bought one two years ago and after two years of swearing at it he gave in and bought a MacBook too.

Expensive but absolutely definitely worth the money

zenasfuck · 17/10/2020 13:54

I've just replaced an 11 year old MacBook Pro with a 2020 MacBook Air. Absolutely brilliant machines, yes they are pricey but they last

grapewine · 17/10/2020 13:55

I have had two Mac Pro laptops. They really last. My current one is 9 years old and is used daily as work and personal computer. I used to take it with me when I travelled for work (until last year). It's working fine. I'm not all about Apple for the sake of it. But I will always save up for Mac laptops.

Melassa · 17/10/2020 13:55

I’ve had Macs since the 90s, both laptops and desktops, all have outlasted by a long stretch any PCs we’ve had.

The only irritating thing I’ve found over the years is that every now and then they change the processors, so programme updates won’t work on an older Mac, rendering it obsolete despite it functioning like a dream. That’s mainly for graphics/creative programmes though, for regular use they keep going. One of mine is from 2006, It still works perfectly but the browsers are too old for it to be of much use. We use it for DVDs and music mainly now.

WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo · 17/10/2020 13:58

My MacBook Pro is 9 years old and happy as Larry. It has a big dent in it but is chugging along regardless.

Itsalwayssunnyupnorth · 17/10/2020 13:58

I have a MacBook Air had it for about 2 years and as quick as the day I got it and it gets heavy use for both work and personal. I initially was put off by the price but so pleased I went for it.

vanillandhoney · 17/10/2020 13:59

God, definitely. I love my MacBook. It's fast, functional, never freezes, has excellent battery life and I've never had a single issue with it.

My parents and I all use MacBooks and have done for 15+ years. They've only been replaced once (each) in that period. They last about 10 years on average before they start to slow down.

ChaBishkoot · 17/10/2020 13:59

Just replaced by Pro after 8 years. Most of my Windows laptops never lasted beyond 3 years.

noseresearch · 17/10/2020 14:03

I have a MacBook Air from 2015, still works very well.
My work laptop is a newer Dell, and I still much prefer using my Macbook

Funnily enough before I got it I was one of those people who thought buying a MacBook was just for the brand etc, but I prefer it to all other laptops I’ve owned

mena51 · 17/10/2020 14:04

Yes. I can't use anything else. I had my old one for almost 8 years before it gave up.

lemorella · 17/10/2020 14:05

Yes I've had mine 6 years paid £850 for it and it's as fast as the day I bought it. I think Steve Jobs once said 'they just work'.

I did buy the office suite for Mac though because I can't give up power point and word for keynote and pages.

deskthinker · 17/10/2020 14:06

I have one and I like it, use it and my ipad pro mostly for creative work with dedicated packages and use a pc for more general stuff. They are good and if you are fully onboard with the apple eco system then yes it can be worth it to get the macbook especially if you wanted to run specialist applications e.g. final cut etc.

However if its just a laptop you need for general computing and you are getting it because you like the look of them (which I admit is pretty nice) then I wouldn't. They are expensive and at this point pretty much unfixable if they get damaged as everything is made as a sealed unit. Just this week a on twitter I saw a girl with a $2000 macbook she's bought less than a month ago, it developed a fault, apply refused to replace it citing user damage and the top apple repair man in NYC had to tell her it wasn't worth fixing, shocking really.

They used to be much easier to repair but its practically impossible now.
