Anyone got an amazon fire?

Are they any good and what type of Jack is it for the headphones?

3.5mm for headphones (and bluetooth on the HD at least), but they're not good. They're the cheapest of the cheap Android tablets, and it really shows. They're also tightly bound to the Amazon app store, which doesn't have anything like the range of the Google one.

If all you want to do is Kindle and very light web, they're just about okay - better than nothing. But if you can, step up to a Samsung or Apple and it'll last for years and be pleasant to use.

FairFriday · 17/10/2020 12:03

It’s for the kids - just to keep them away from mums iPad!

I love mine, although I do appreciate it has it's limitations. It depends what you want to do with it.

I use my laptop most of the time. My Fire is for reading; reading emails; playing spider patience; browsing on here and listening to bedtime stories. It's so much cheaper than the alternatives and it meets my needs perfectly. I also use it as a main computer on holiday.

The ads are a bit annoying but not too bad doing the things I do but you can pay a little more and get it ad free.

IAintentDead · 17/10/2020 12:12

I've just seen your update and would say it's absolutely fine for kids so long as they don't want high speed gaming.

You can easily put parental controls on too. Far better to get 2 (or more) Fires than one of the more expensive ones that they are still going to fight over.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 17/10/2020 12:14

My kids have amazon fire.
My 13 year old uses it to play her games.
Younger kids aged 6 and 4 use it for youtube, games and their homework.
I like them, I have one for reading my kindle books.
Battery is amazing on them. I read every night and charge it maybe once/twice a week, I keep it on when I am not reading.
I think it is fine for kids. The kids protective case is a godsend! My 4 year old has dropped hers on hard floor and it hasn't broken.

FairFriday · 17/10/2020 12:17

Oh I for them one each! They were on the Prime sale and pretty good - and dad is always grumbling ‘the kids are on mums iPad and I have to wrestle it off them she she wants it back’

I find mine slow but they’d be fine for small kids.

I got one for my elderly mother from QVC U.K. You pay and get 60 days to try them and if you don’t like them you can send them back used and get all your money back except the postage both ways. So your kids could try them and see if they are fast enough.

They may have deals in now coming up to Christmas, worth a look?

NannyR · 17/10/2020 12:38

I like mine - I use it for internet browsing and shopping, emails, facebook, Netflix when travelling - it does everything I need it to. I don't like reading on it though, much prefer a paperwhite for that.

FatGirlShrinking · 17/10/2020 12:40

Fine for kids, my biggest grumble about them is that the Amazon software takes up about half the available internal storage and cannot be deleted. So you are reliant on putting in an SD card, problem being that not all the apps can be stored on an SD card so the internal storage fills up quick.

They're also very slow compared to an iPad.

thegcatsmother · 17/10/2020 12:55

I love mine - and wouldn't thank you for an iPad. I have the Fire for reading the paper, MNing, and when I'm mooching about. I have a desktop for everything else.

They're also very slow compared to an iPad Mine is loads faster than dh's iPad, which is very old. We bought my Mum a Fire to replace her iPad, as she doesn't need everything that an iPad does, so why bother and pay way too much?

vanillandhoney · 17/10/2020 12:56

I think they're awful, even for kids tbh.

We have one and it's painfully slow. I don't even use it because it takes so long to do anything.

FairFriday · 17/10/2020 12:56

How much memory does it have?

OP posts:
Inaquandry19 · 17/10/2020 12:58

Fine for kids. You can insert a memory card to expand the memory and you can get Google play on there but it is a bit of a faff. Instructions to do it are readily available on the Internet.

firedragon101 · 17/10/2020 12:59

I love mine for reading, watching movies and audible.
Memory can be expanded with micro-SD card.
It is very slow, but cheap and cheerful and leaves my other tablet free for 'proper' work!

firedragon101 · 17/10/2020 13:01

Also great for kids, although we couldn't do the online school work on them. But parental controls are simple to use, and mine have to do 30 mins reading before being able to play games etc

FatGirlShrinking · 17/10/2020 13:27

It says 12gb on the box but when you go into the storage settings it's more like 6gb

Gertie75 · 17/10/2020 13:30

We've got through so many of them, the last one broke after 3 months, the charging points always end up loose and the storage is very limited.

We've now bought the kids a Samsung tablet each and so far so good.

IAintentDead · 17/10/2020 13:54

@FairFriday

You can get them with different size memories now - clearly a bigger memory is more expensive though.

It's not slow when new. You need to remember to clear the cache and memory regularly to keep the speed up.

Black Friday is coming up in a month or so. Probably some great deals then. Get them a different colour one each too - then there can be no arguing about whose is which

vanillandhoney · 17/10/2020 13:57

Mine has been slow since the day I set it up!

EatPrayYoga · 17/10/2020 13:59

DH and use them, fire 8 I think, as we got two for about £100 including Alexa echo show docks. They work well for us but they are a bit less sleek than iPads or Samsung tablets.

Bmidreams · 17/10/2020 14:01

We don't use ours cos of the internal storage issue. We got the sd card but most things still go on internal storage, like their programmes from iPlayer. So it was no good for travelling and holidays (no Wi-Fi).

thegcatsmother · 17/10/2020 15:38

Mine is 64gb, so no problems with storage, and it is still pretty quick.

nighttrains · 17/10/2020 15:41

Yes, we've got one somewhere - I'm not quite sure where it is though.

EchoLimaYankee · 17/10/2020 18:59

Absolute shite. You have to do weird downloads to get the google play store to download apps from there. Even then they don’t really work. It was a total lockdown fail for us, DD was really frustrated by it and so was I!

Dreading2020sSeasonFinale · 17/10/2020 22:13

I love mine. I'm currently watching Amazon Prime video on it at the hospital waiting for my husband to get out of A&E (nothing too serious). so glad the hospital WiFi extends right down the car park and the access code is online! Yay! Ha ha. On hour 4 of a Lost marathon.

The picture quality is absolutely fantastic. It's loud enough, and can connect to Bluetooth headphones as well as standard 3.5mm wired ones.
