Job decision

I needed a part-time local job and looked around for a long time before finding something relevant and enjoyable, however it involved a huge drop in pay as it was a junior role. My previous job involved a long commute that ate into my potential part-time hours, and so I would have earned about the same money as I do now but working two hours less, and wasting those two hours commuting. So, I was happy to take the pay cut. However, I have just been advised that my previous role is coming up again but now available as a work-from-home position. I really love my current job, and my new colleagues, but if I get offered my old job I will increase my part-time earnings by 37%! The only negative would be letting my new team down, and in the WFH role I'd see no colleagues at all. What would you do?

Potential.to progress in new role?

Otherwise you have to return to old role -37% is significant.

Did you ask at the time for a WFH role? And did they object? Did you like your previous colleagues? If they never made it difficult for you and you liked the people then I would go for the 37% rise. It could be a big lifestyle changer. But take note of what your gut and instinct tells you...

Potential.to progress , yes probably, however the FTE is the same as what I was earning 16 years ago, so I'd probably not be back up to the previous salary for another 16 years! I do love the job, though it doesn't really use my skills. It is a relevant field but just a very junior role.

mummyof2lou there wasn't any possibility of WFH when I was there for technical reasons. It was a few years ago. Things have recently changed though and obviously with covid happening they have facilitated WFH for everyone. I have been somewhat headhunted for the role. They are great employers to work for, but so are my new employers (salary aside).

Take the old job with higher pay. It sounds like it is a good job and WFH is great at the moment.

If they also have an office, might there be potential to go in 1 day per week once the current lockdowns are over, which can be a good way to balance a long commute versus lack of seeing colleagues.

Then if I were you I'd go back!

parietal yes there is an office, though they are very quiet and focussed in there (not so much at the new place) so I'm not sure how much interaction there would be. I'm really happy at the new place in every way apart from salary. It was a huge compromise in order to get a local job.
