What to cook on toasting forks at the fire?

We went to the zoo in Lapland back in January and they had bonfires dotted around, with toasting forks for toasting your own sausages, and in -31 degrees it was absolutely gorgeous : ) So I bought a set of toasting forks for here. We're having fireplace tea every friday in October as a sort of Oktoberfest thing, with hotdogs and sweet mustard. We've done smores as well, though I'm not that gone on those, to be honest.

What else can we do? Obviously there's the whole Enid Blyton lashings of buttered toast thing, but I'm stumped after that. The whole experience is lovely, but I don't fancy hotdogs every friday forever!

Different types of bread and bready stuff, muffins, soda bread, potato bread, malt loaf etc (with different types of cheese or spreads)?

Marshmallows, for S'mores.

Anything that grills well - Potato waffles, halloumi, bacon.

Sounds like a great idea, am a bit jealous of your fire

Crumpets

I went to boarding school and the food was both dire and meagre.
We supplemented it with toast and crumpets done over a fire and then buttered. Food of the gods.
Sausages would have been a real luxury. A good sausage or smoked sausage, toasted on the fire then served in a folded over piece of toasted bread, or roll, or pitta, with mustard or ketchup or both, would be wonderful. Or small pieces of lamb or chicken on a long barbecue type skewer too. They have to be small or they take ages to cook.
And don't forget chestnuts! Although you need to do them in a metal cage of some kind (Like a barbecue implement?) or they shoot off in all directions when they start to char.

Crumpets are the first choice!
Lamb kofta?
Cheese & potato croquettes?
Chinese spring rolls?

Crumpets with lashings of butter and golden syrup. Lick it from your wrists as it melts and runs through. Delicious!

Toast?

Fumnudge · 17/10/2020 00:58

Thin slices of chorizo (ready sliced) with a sliver of cheddar in, fold over so the cheese is encased. Cremate. Delicious.

With bacon would the fat not drip/spit? You could always hold a pan under I suppose.

Mmm. I'm liking this list. I'll be adding all of those to the shopping list for next week! Especially halloumi; I wonder does it squeak over the fire like hotdogs do?

No need, I wouldn’t have thought. Just like a burger or sausage on a barbecue.

It isn't done on a fork, but add a banana with a couple of bits of choc wrapped in tin foil in the embers for pudding - food of the gods!

Dough snakes. Make dough, twist it round the forks and cook

Teacakes/hotcross buns/fruitbread
Bagels
