Under active thyroid

Hi! Positing in chat for tragic, hope that’s okay.
I recently had fertility bloods done and was told my thyroid was underactive and to book in for another blood test (this was by text) but haven’t actually spoken to a doctor since. My blood test is next week but I’m just wondering what they are actually testing for this time if they have already said I have an under active thyroid? Is it to see what’s caused it? I feel like as we can’t see doctors face to face I have had no information or reassurance about it.

Thanks

I have underactive thyroid, but found out after pregnancy. I had regular blood tests to start with to make sure the medication was right. The standard chrck is for TSH/T4 I believe. Additional tests for T3 and some times thyroid antibody test.

Its best to ask when you go. Smile

They often repeat the test before actually diagnosing.
I couldn’t conceive, tried for 12 months, and found I was under active.
Went on the tablets and was pregnant 12 months later.
Good luck 🤞🏻

Same as other posters, got diagnosed after first pregnancy, for second pregnancy had to be under consultant care as apparently the medication has to be monitored as it can cause issues with the baby's development in the womb. The consultant care bit was fine, just a few more scans (bonus!) And blood tests and I wasn't allowed a water birth (boo) but everything was perfectly normal.
Oh and I always mention to people with under active as I was told by a pharmacist in a fairly offhand way to never take the tablets within an hour of milk products.(I assume it blocks the absorption) had never heard that advice before and I had been taking them for years at that point.

Thyroid tests can either be very basic or dig a bit deeper. It could be that they want to repeat the test before putting you on meds. My dodgy thyroid was identified during infertility struggles and I’ve been on meds since. Sadly, it’s something that doesn’t go away so you need your daily little pill forever.

Thanks everyone. It’s just a whirlwind of blood tests atm and I’m so stressed. I’d barley heard of an underactive thyroid so it’s all new to me. Scary that I’ll be on tablets the rest of my life Confused

One bonus you get free prescriptions because of having to take levothyroxine, at todays prices that's a silver lining of it beside the health aspect... good luck with your results.

I remember feeling that it was the start of the rot setting in, that my body was starting to decline on its way to death !
But I had another baby and taking the tablets is just part of the daily routine before I brush my teeth.
I’ve only ever had my dose tweaked once, while I was pregnant, and the free prescriptions are a bonus !
It’s not scary or anything to fear.

@FippertyGibbett that’s how I feel. I went to the doctors end of November last year with severe fatigue and low moods, I was told to change my diet. I’m annoyed I was offered a blood test at the time as I now feel like my health has just been declining over the months Sad I’m happy to take medication as long as it sorts me out and hopefully I am able to conceive.

I didn't realise just how ill I felt until I started taking Thyroxine. Within 4 days all sorts of issues had improved. They've upped my dose recently so now on 100 mcg. I've piled on 2 stone since February though !

@GinisLife glad you have started to feel better! Now I have been diagnosed it’s nice to feel guilt free when I go back to bed on a weekend Grin
