Has anyone successfully got rid of nail fungus?

I have had one infected toenail for about three years. Nothing I’ve tried from over the counter so far has worked. It’s starting to really piss me off. Has anyone got any miracle cures I should try?

I’ve been using my Phillips Lumea on my sons and it has cleared up loads.

I'm nearly there- like a PP I decided to tackle over lockdown- I stopped wearing nail varnish, bathed and filed in morning and then applied Viks and latterly tea tree oil, also kept trimming nail every few days even if by only millimetres so the Tea tree oil could enter the nail- It is nearly gone- I has it on little toe and the 2 sides of my big toe and it is gone in little toe and going in big toe- I also kept it out in the sunlight after putting the tea tree oil on as much as possible- you just have to stick at it, and effectively cut the whole nail off bit by bit while slavishly applying the oil

I used hand sanitiser, it cleared up my athletes foot too.

I found that cutting the nail really short, and filing the top, and applying athletes foot medicine, did the trick for my big toe nail. Two other toes are more stubborn, though. Maybe the nail is permanently damaged...

Nail damage creates a broken barrier which then becomes a nice environment for fungal infection. Runners are advised to buy their running shoes a half-size too big and wear two pairs of socks for just this reason. A toenail that’s broken clean off will never grow back correctly, which can cause mobility problems in later life, so worth looking after them.

SisterAgatha · 17/10/2020 14:34

I don’t know about that, I’ve lost two toenails in my life and both have grown back better looking than the ones I had before. It’s not always true they grow back worse.

Emmapeeler2 · 17/10/2020 14:40

My mum's big toenail came clean off last year and she says it was grown back less deformed!

inchyra · 17/10/2020 14:42

It’s the neglected break that’s the issue, I believe it’s not such a big deal if the nail comes away for other reasons. (I’m a runner and this is my own postage stamp of clinical expertise Grin).

I did a war if attrition based on tea tree oil. Cut the nail as short as you dare, and file it on the surface. Liberally apply tea tree oil after every shower. Keep cutting the nail down and eventually you will see new nice growth. I can't take terbinafine as I have Crohn's so there's a danger with my other meds. So perseverance is my only choice!

@StealthPolarBear

What do you do with the vicks, just completely cover the entire nail?
I get as much as I can down my toe nail between the nail & the skin & rub it into the side of the nail where it meets the skin then rub in to the nail (sounds faffy but it's really not). I keep the nail pretty short.

But actual vicks though, not the 'Knock off' vapour rub that wilko etc sell

Ewwwwww I will tell him. From what a pp says though in wondering if it might be damage rather than fungal. He runs most days and quite high impact iyswim
Sorry for several messages...

Both my big toes have issues. I 'think' one is infection & the other is impact. As I said earlier I'm always doing something to them -kicking a table leg or wheeling a trolly over them and although I most definitely do not run, I get the same issue as your DH with lots of walking.

Whatever the actual fuck it is, they are both much better since I've been using vicks. It's cheap, easy & not unpleasant to use, so well worth a go IMHO

StealthPolarBear · 17/10/2020 19:08

Really helpful thank you! He said one is definitely fungal, others he's not sure so it can't hurt. I bought him some of the proper stuff yesterday.
However for now he's going to persevere with the expensive stuff I bought him about a week ago and then assuming that makes no difference, on to the vicks
