Me and DS spent this evening planning

some detonations we’d love to visit. It was a lovely way to take our mind off things and I’m thinking of actually creating a kind of ‘inspiration board’ full of pictures of the places we’d like to go. We’ve never been far so our choices are a bit vague.

I wonder if any well travelled MNers could whittle it to a more specific area for us ?!

I would love to go to Vermont or similar, or somewhere in Canada with breathtaking scenery, forests, rivers, mountains, waterfalls. Log cabin. Autumn.

Top of his list is Japan. Inspired by Spirited Away. Food, scenery again, tech etc.

Plus any more suggestions would be wonderful Flowers

This is probably more of a dream board than an inspiration board, for me at least, but we found it very therapeutic just thinking about it

Also, I’m not imagining I’m going to get to these places, but hoping it will inspire DS to travel when he has the means

If you like animals/outdoors - an African safari is a brilliant experience.

SlopesOff · 15/10/2020 20:23

I have always fancied going to watch a gas works being blown up, or one of those very tall chimneys.

I’ve done that! And high rise flats.
Minniem2020 · 15/10/2020 20:31

I work in travel and in quiet times have always had a bit of a dream list, not so much destinations but hotels that are just something else.
There used to be a brochure called world class which I used for most of my dreaming

Giganticshark · 15/10/2020 20:35

What a lovely thing to do op!

How old is your son?
We adore France, so many beautiful villages and interesting towns, rivers, food!

There's a tiny village steeped in motor history about 40 mins outside of Le Mans, there's a statue of Joan of Ark atop a hill, which we only found due to 'geocaching'

snowstorm2012 · 15/10/2020 20:36

We've been to Swedish Lapland and stayed at Pine Bay Lodge and also went to their other one - Brandon Lodge. Was amazing and so beautiful, my sons (13 and 15) at the time absolutely loved it - would love to go back one day Smile

carlycornwall · 15/10/2020 20:41

Oh so many - Kyoto, Japan, halong bay and hue in Vietnam, northern Thailand during Songkran (their new year)
Autumnal city breaks in Prague, Budapest, Vienna and Amsterdam

The Canadian rockies - Banff is amazing and we sat in a hot tub watching the northern lights on our first evening.

Winter breaks in Bergen, Norway, Copenhagen, Berlin for Christmas markets

Tea plantations and incredible scenery in Sri Lanka.

Chilled evenings in rooftop tavernas with amazing views in Lindos, Rhodes

We're so lucky to have travelled lots but it hasn't quenched the thirst to do more. I have been miserable without it this year.

WineGummyBear · 15/10/2020 20:42

I'm here for the Dynamite. Feel like all the good puns have been taken

Smile
MsKeats · 15/10/2020 20:43

GBR.

One of the best holidays ever. Maldives and Barbados are on my list!

MsKeats · 15/10/2020 20:44

Also want to go to Gauadeloupe -but we are massive Death in paradise fans

backinthebox · 15/10/2020 20:45

We have a huge list. Sadly Covid has really hampered our ability to act on any of them. In no particular order our fantasy travel list includes:

Jordan - historic sites at Petra and Jerash, camping with the Bedouin in Wadi Rum, scuba diving in the Red Sea at Aqaba, floating in the Dead Sea, crusader castles.
Japan - Pikachu flash mobs, firework festivals, The secret ninja restaurant, skiing in Hokkaido, bullet trains, Mount Fuji.
Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia - long tail boats, street markets and buddhas in Bangkok, beaches at Krabi, jungle trekking, Angkor Wat, deltas.
Costa Rica - volcanoes, jungles, beaches
Argentina - training at polo ranches, waterfalls, mountains and pampas.
Driving around Italy - Florence, Venice, Rome, Sorrento, Pompeii.
Winter adventures in Lapland.

So many places to go to!

We love a bit of adventure and roughing it rather than secreting ourselves away from the country in a sanitised resort.

the year I am 60 my son will be 21, planning a big overland trip probably Cape Town to Victoria Falls, or Nairobi to Victoria Falls

He also wants to see the Pyramids

backinthebox · 15/10/2020 20:48

It all looks a bit exotic but I could also give you a fabulous guided tour of amazing things to see and do within a 20 min drive of my house too, and I’ve taken the kids on a long weekend on home turf.

NomadNoMore · 15/10/2020 20:51

@Giganticshark do you know the name of the village? I live not too far away

Meruem · 15/10/2020 20:51

As a bit of inspiration OP, I couldn’t afford to travel when DC were young as I was a single parent on a limited budget. But when they got older and my career progressed, I had more funds. I finally took DS to Japan when he was 21 (his dream destination) and we had the most amazing time. DD and I have been to the US and Egypt (her choices). Don’t think that your DS wouldn’t want to travel with you when he’s older. Fulfilling your dreams together is a wonderful experience.

JulietteLeGall · 15/10/2020 20:52

backinthebox would love to know more. UK wish list could be Achievable !

We drove Route 66 from Chicago to LA, and visited most of the places in the song 'Get Your Kicks On Route 66', that was a fantastic road trip, will never forget it.
Also travelled extensively in New England just loved Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine in particular.
Finally, have you thought of island hopping in the Greek islands? Gorgeous!

GeorgiaGirl52 · 15/10/2020 20:56

Lake Louise in Canada

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/10/2020 20:56

Horseshoe bend of the grand canyon is spectacular, as are emerald lake, and lake peyto, both in Canada are beautiful!

TooTrueToBeGood · 15/10/2020 20:57

Rainbow mountain in Peru:

Me and DS spent this evening planning
Millie2013 · 15/10/2020 20:59

DD and I regularly do this, we’ve only mapped UK destinations so far, but maybe we need to think a bit further afield :)

Krazynights34 · 15/10/2020 20:59

I’m so sorry but I’m still laughing at detonations - why was that an autocorrect 🤣🤣🤣

WarmSausageTea · 15/10/2020 21:00

Alaska is stunning, the scenery and wildlife almost take your breath away. The first town we visited had bear-proof bins and eagles perched on the lampposts. And the space... so much space. I’d love to spend 2-3 months just pootling around.
