Please can anyone recommend me a book?

I generally loved time fiction, but am open to other areas.

Eeeny meenie by Mj Aldridge was good.

The Roy grace series are my fav though!

Inextremis · 15/10/2020 17:38

I can't listen to fiction, because I tend to fall asleep (more on that in a moment) and lose track of where I've got to. If you do have any problem sleeping, OP, I can't recommend 'This Audiobook Will Send You to Sleep' highly enough. It's totally brilliant, does what it says, and I find it hilarious in parts - on first listen I was too busy dealing with helpless giggles to sleep - but I'm now on my 8th or 9th listen and it works very well!

I use mine for listening to “the classics”. I listened to The Handmaid’s tale and then moved onto The Testaments. I’ve nearly finished To Kill a Mockingbird (which I’ve enjoyed much more than reading it! Even fallen head over heels for Atticus...) and have just downloaded the follow up Go Set a Watchman.

Martin Walker's books about Bruno, Chef de Police are my current favourite - a great mix of French history, lifestyle and culture mixed with crime and espionage and not to forget Bruno's often complicated love life and some great descriptions of Dordogne countryside and cuisine. And he's an animal lover. Pure escapism.

CormoranStrike · 15/10/2020 18:43

I’ve gone for Steve Cavanagh’s Thirteen, and have added lots more to my wish list in your recommendation.

The Five was probably my book of the decade. The stories of the women who were killed by the original Jack the Ripper. Not many books have moved me in the same way.

NUFC69 · 15/10/2020 19:12

Thanks, Sooverthemill, I will have a look see.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/10/2020 23:13

NUFC69 you could also check out Scribd. You pay a monthly fee and listen to/read as many as you want. They don't have as wide a range as Audible but I always find something to listen to or read.

Sooverthemill · 16/10/2020 07:46

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar I use scribd! Isn't it fab? DD and I share the subscription and I love that I can read a book and switch to audio version ( not all but very many books).

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/10/2020 18:04

The good thing about Scribd is not having that sense of panic that you're nearly finished a book and there's still a fortnight before you get the next Audible credit. Grin On the other hand if you go searching for a specific book or author Audible will nearly always have it whereas Scribd is a bit hit and miss.

User 478 have you ever listened to her Stand Up for The Classics? you can get it for free on audible 9 (after I forked out 20 bastard quid for it on audible)

user1471565182 · 16/10/2020 19:12

dont know where that 9 came from

user1471565182 · 16/10/2020 19:14

I got audible when it had been out about a week and it had about 2 books on. No idea why I kept it around but definitely worth it now.

Kote · 16/10/2020 19:20

If you're into non-fiction/memoir then Becoming by Michelle Obama. I love it when the author reads the book themselves.

User478 · 16/10/2020 22:44

I love stands up for the classics, it's not free on my audible account, but I catch it on radio 4 every now and then.

I agree about the Michelle Obama autobiography, I don't usually like autobiographies but I loved "Becoming".

BiBabbles · 16/10/2020 22:51

There is a new gothic time travel fiction - A Stitch in Time by Kelley Armstrong that could be another great addition to yours and others interested in the same's lists.

user1471565182 · 16/10/2020 23:21

yeah i mean spotify rather than audible. If you search for it on podcasts it was there last time i looked
