A new viewer's question about GBBO

We've gradually fallen into watching this, and DH and I have become (late) converts.

But one thing really puzzles me. Each episode clearly takes place over two days. The showstopper is on day 2 - and contestants in their pieces to camera often reference 'tomorrow'.

Yet on the day when they're filmed doing their showstoppers, they're all wearing the same clothes as the day before, including Paul, Pru, Noel and Matt.

Why?!

Continuity. So they can cut shots together and it doesn't matter which day they use. Things like peering into an oven or looking slightly harassed could be from either day

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 14/10/2020 19:44

I think this every single time I watch - have never bothered to find out! I would also really like to know the answer to this question!!!

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 14/10/2020 19:45

Do you think the contestants wear the same thing two days running, wash clothes or have 2 of everything? It seems like it must be pretty sweaty at times in the kitchen!!!

@grandmasterstitch is right. It's for continuity and pick up shots.

iklboo · 14/10/2020 19:46

They have their clothes laundered overnight I think.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/10/2020 19:46

They do the same on the Sewing Bee.

Cos Pauls a fucking tramp.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 14/10/2020 19:48

I have always wondered this! Thanks, grandmasterstitch!

BIWI · 14/10/2020 19:48

Ah, that makes sense.

Glad to hear they have their clothes laundered overnight though!

I suspected it’s because it’s not over two days as they might want us to believe? but filmed on the same day.

Freshfaced · 14/10/2020 19:56

Thank you for this. I've watched 6 series and it's only just dawned on me that they do this. Lotty's jumpsuit was very distinctive which triggered the thought!

SimonJT · 14/10/2020 19:56

Continuity, also this year contestants are finally allowed to wear shorts.

BIWI · 14/10/2020 19:58

@missyB1

I suspected it’s because it’s not over two days as they might want us to believe? but filmed on the same day.
But it can't possibly all be filmed on the same day, given the time they give for each of the tasks.

Yes fair point about time, they would be exhausted Grin

CrazyToast · 14/10/2020 20:25

I watch Bar Rescue and it is the same! Some of them are hammered when they first meet and are still in the same clothes over the whole time. I hate it. Like we wouldnt know it was the same people if they werent in the same clothes.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 14/10/2020 20:26

What I wanted to know and sort of assume is ..
Is it the props team who make all the display boards for their cakes?
Sometimes they have their own homemade gadgets I remember one year one contestants husband was making all kinds for her.
But yesterday there was a chalkboard display etc. Surely they domt bring them in?
I guess so they arent just on a plain plate??

NotOfThisWorld · 14/10/2020 20:28

Oh god I've never noticed this. Now it's going to bother me. I guess as PP said it must be for continuity and so they can use generic footage of people standing around from either day.

WinnieSandersonsCat · 14/10/2020 20:32

We picked up on this last night as we thought the clothes must be laundered. The blonde lady had quite a chocolate messy apron (after the brownie and tech challenge), the next day she worked only with white chocolate yet her apron was covered in brown chocolate (we presumed from yesterday). We presumed the aprons would be laundered etc. Between days but last night was quite evident

I’ve never noticed this/ did the bbc do this too?

KurriKawari · 14/10/2020 20:46

So many shows do this for continuity.

Ellewoods20 · 14/10/2020 20:54

need the contestants make their own display boards.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 14/10/2020 22:28

Wow. Now I'm doubly impressed. Amazing baking and display boards. Well done contestants!
My display board would look like a toddler had gone crazy in hobby craft...mind you my baking has a similar look! Grin

Soupcon · 14/10/2020 22:40

Absolutely for continuity. The bit that mildly blows my mind is how many camera operators are active in the tent during filming — in later rounds at least, each contestant apparently has their own camera on them all the time — but obviously none of the final edit that’s broadcast can ever show them, so periodically the tent must have to cleared of all cameras but one, so it can do one of the many wide-angle shots of the tent being empty apart from the contestants hard at work. Before all the staff, cameras etc shuffle back in again.

But can you imagine trying to film Lottie swearing into her white chocolate while avoiding catching another camera in the background filming someone else’s cake going up in flames, or editing it out in post-production?
