Newborn - is this normal?

DD is 3 days old. Breastfed.
She passed meconium in the womb
She is very sicky. Today has been particularly bad. She has just brought up a lot of milk and then fallen asleep.
She is breastfed.
I feel so bad for her, this must be so uncomfortable. My son was never sick which I know is unusual.
Will this pas? Can I do anything to help her? She will wake up soon I know because she is hungry. Poor mite.

My DD was a sicky baby. If it's any comfort I don't think it is quite so uncomfortable for them as for us. But are you worried about her? She's so new, if you have any misgivings, it might be an idea to contact your HV or 111.

She is feeding often so I'm not worried about nutrition but I do feel terrible for her. My son was a high needs baby and I ended up with PND so I'm also just nervous of that.

I'm so sorry, that sounds really tough with your son. PND is horrible. I am just going off my experience with my DD - but, really, I think that vomiting is much less nasty for them than for us. DD was terrible - she'd vomit multiple times in the hour, every hour, for months. It's all a blur now but I remember choosing a dress for my brother's wedding, when she was 5 months old, on the basis it wouldn't show too much when she vomited down it! But really, I don't think it was so grim for her as it felt to me. And if your baby is asleep, she must be fairly comfortable?

Reflux?

Is she having plenty of wet and sorry nappies?

OhToBeASeahorse · 14/10/2020 00:45

I've popped her in her crib. She just doesn't feel relaxed, it's like she is tensing up.

Plenty of nappies. Yellow poo tonight

Seriously, if you are worried, call. The worst they will do is tell you not to worry.

To me, if you can get her sleeping into a crib, it sounds pretty good, but I am not a medical professional and I think with tiny babies it can be really nervy, and that's why no sensible medic will ever mind you checking in with them.

Thank you. I really appreciate your reply. I'll see how we go in the next couple of hours. She has just bought a bit more up.

Yellow poo is good. When you say plenty of nappies is it wet nappies you mean?

My DD was very sicky for the first 3 months of her life. She had reflux and we found infant gaviscon helped her a lot as well as keeping her upright for at least 30 minutes after each feed.
I rang 111 to start with as I wasn't sure if her throwing up a lot was normal. The doctor told me that being sick isn't a big deal for most babies and that you only need to worry if it is a certain colour or coming out with such force that it is hitting the other side of the room.
If you are worried, give 111 a call or speak to your HV in the morning.

OhToBeASeahorse · 14/10/2020 01:25

She's awake again but doesnt want to feed.

My youngest was sick for the first twelve months. Worse after he was weaned. Doctor said it was normal, we said it was not. Took a further six months to get a diagnosis of duadenal web. Very rare, so you probably don't have this, but be prepared to be batted away as normal by the doctors.

Pyloric stenosis can be v common and is easily sorted. Not saying it is, but worth checking for if she’s bringing a lot up.

Duckswaddle · 14/10/2020 04:59

*easily sorted with an operation, that should say.
