Teacher has asked me to get DDs hearing tested, if that's ok what else could it be?

My DD is in reception. The teacher has asked me to get her hearing checked as she does not seem to be involved or know what's going on when in working in small/big groups.

She said she is fine 1 to 1. And if the hearing is ok they will look into other issues.

I have for a GP call for tomorrow to get her referred for a test.

Don't mean to jump the gun, but I have never noticed an issue with her hearing, so I'm wondering if there is anyone who can suggest what else it could be?

Op, your very lucky the teacher has even mentioned this, many miss all clues to all sorts of things.

Don't panic, just get it tested.
It could be any range of issues.

Oh No that also means it must be really bad and noticeable!

Yes I am panicking SadThank you for your reply

Your DD’s teacher sounds great - on the ball and caring enough to notice and talk to you about it (you’d be shocked just how many don’t notice or care enough to mention it).
If her hearing is ok then they’ll look at other possible reasons. The key is not to overly worry though - lots of reasons for this and it could be something and nothing.

It's a lot quieter and there are fewer distractions at home, so it's easy to not notice hearing issues indoors.

Her teacher is fantastic, And my DD is so happy at school.

True about it being quieter at home, good point.

Don't panic. If the hearing is fine, paediatrics will likely assess her speech and language. They'll know what to look into next and you'll be guided by them. Start with the test and take it from there.

And don't worry! Easier said than done, I know.
Some children keep themselves to themselves a bit more than others. That may be who she is... for now. Perhaps she's shy and overwhelmed at this age. But by year 2 or 3, she may be a social butterfly.

For what it's worth, my DD presented the same way as your DD when she was in nursery. I had her hearing checked and she failed in both ears. She had glue ear and her hearing, I can only imagine, was just awful. I had no idea. It wasn't obvious and I felt so badly. The reason she had her hearing check was because I was concerned by how distant she was in nursery. She didn't engage in group activities and didn't seem to know what to do a lot of the time. She was a bit remote and insular. The GP suggested starting with a hearing test and we got our answer. Anyway, she's 10 now and has no residual problems or permanent hearing loss.

A friend of mines child had glue ear, so I have thought about this.

Thank you for the positive story about your DD!

My DD's mentioned exactly the same thing to me in Reception. So I had her hearing tested, she had about 40% hearing loss due to massive adenoids, tonsils and glue ear. So she had a operation in Y1 to have them all removed and grommets put in, the difference was amazing! So I'm so glad she mentioned it to me.

Titsywoo · 13/10/2020 18:56

My teacher said the same thing to my mum when I was at primary school. Turns out I'm just a day dreamer and was completely zoning out!

RoseDog · 13/10/2020 18:56

Has she ever had her eyes tested? Sounds strange but when I don't have my glasses on and can't see I also become deaf because I'm putting so much focus on trying to see I can't hear!

notanotheronepleasee · 13/10/2020 19:16

@Teabird her tonsils are massive!!!
@Titsywoo that made me laugh 😆
@RoseDog actually yes she has had an eye test! Eyes are ok 👍

Thank you all, you've spun it for me that this is actually a good thing.. if anything's wrong it's better that it's picked up now

Could be processing issues - struggling to cope with multiple inputs.
Much better to have things picked up early.
